Has anyone decided they have enough?

Hi Mr. Gordon!
You have started the very interesting thread.

I got that way with hunting too.The last time I went Deer hunting,I had a 100% sure kill shot and never took it.I still had a good time being the thrill was in the hunt............

I get more enjoyment having the friends I made on the Buck forum than the knives.:DMaybe the Winter time Blues Gordon.:)

I have heard the same things from few hunters in Russia too.
I agree with your two last sentences in your post.

I feel that way all the time, then I stumble upon another knife.I buy that knife, then say that's enough. If only it worked.:o

Yeah, me too. :o

I seriously went on the Buck wagon couple years back. Bought very few last year and only one so far this year, and am embarrassed at what I paid for it, even with it being one of the best of the best.

But do like I did a week or so back, dump them all out in the floor and fondle them for a while. See what all is in the pile and figure out what you paid. Like the 4 pin you all let me steal for ten bucks plus a little shipping. :o

Maybe the blues will go away.:rolleyes::D

That 4 pinner makes a little smiley face just above the two 112's at bottom center of the pic.

LOL,Hi my name's Tom and I'm a Buckaholic. I can relate to getting burn out.Sort of like 338 I really had the bug with guns over the years and it got to the point of total burn out.I sold a bunch and kept just the ones I figured I'd use.A few I sold I kind of regret but no big deal.I got that way with hunting too.The last time I went Deer hunting,I had a 100% sure kill shot and never took it.I still had a good time being the thrill was in the hunt.Since I quit working my knife buying has slowed down and now I've lately just been doing the bay looking for lucky finds on old Bucks. The other day I almost ordered a piece of 5160 spring steel stock from a factory back East that makes it to try and forge my own version of the Hoodlum with changes I think would make it better, just for fun. Then it hit me there's more important things around the place I should be working on first.I get more enjoyment having the friends I made on the Buck forum than the knives.:DMaybe the Winter time Blues Gordon.:)

Tom, I too passed on several buck deer this year that had acceptable racks. One was a 10 and one was a 9.

My niece came out to hunt and she got the 9. Then later the youngest Granddaughter got the 10.

Them taking those racks...... PRICELESS, as the saying goes.

When I read about you not taking the shot while hunting, it reminded me of myself.
When I was younger, anything that was legal, and a clean shot, it was going down.
I can't tell you how many deer I've passed up in the last few years. They were all legal, but some were smaller, and I just didn't feel good about it, even though they should have been easy shots.
I know if I needed to get the meat to feed my family, the hunting would be different.
Even though I absolutely love the meat, I guess I've changed as I've gotten older. I completely agree with you about it being more about the hunt, than just the kill...

Now the Elk, I'm a little more focused on those :D

That is have enough knives? I got to thinking I was becoming only interested in knives I would use. Then I got to thinking I can't use but a few knives. Granted, I have some I'm still hot and bothered by but I feel my general interest in knives fading. I never would have thought I'd get bored!

You have been "Buck Fever" immunized!! :p

That's great,I bet they were excited.:thumbup::)

Yep... About a year, year and a half ago, I completely burned out on knives.

It wasn't that I didn't like them anymore, I just lost the passion. I think I was like you Flat, knives consumed me. As soon as I got up, I was searching for the next one. Then no sooner had I found and scored one, it was on to the next one...

At the time, I was collecting mostly older Case knives, and some Schrades.
One day when I went to take some out, and wipe them down, I found I just didn't enjoy having them locked up in a safe anymore.

So, I sold off a bunch, kept some that I really liked, and started carrying them.
I found I got more enjoyment out of having them in pocket, and being able to take them out and use them, than I did just hoarding them.

I did the same thing when I was collecting old Winchesters and Colts too.

There were two very big safes that were crammed full, plus guns in the drawers, in the closets, and under the beds. One day I started looking around and it hit me. I thought to myself, this is crazy... I did the same thing with the guns. Kept a few I really liked, and sold off the rest.

Funny thing is, there are only a few that I wish I still had.

This too applies to me as well, Like Jim said "it's as if I typed it myself"

Knives can be like your old lady, you love her and don't know what you would do with out her but sometimes you need to sit in another room. Take a break and your love will be back when its ready..

no i dont have enugh
i can think of about 20 i want still
and i have over 300 now...
and no place to put them!
some times i take them out to wipe them off
and get fever all over again...

Most, not all, but most of my collection are either users or potential users. Just last night I put a Jaguar Kalinga to use as a pizza cutter. It was sitting on a table near by and I needed to cut one of those frozen pizzas you get from the store and it was the closest thing. I figured one pizza won't ruin it, the pizza being on a wood cutting board. Now I think the knife has found a purpose in knife-dom. It makes a great pizza cutter.

Just like changing socks or shirts every day, you can rotate a fairly sizable collection.

I had enough a long time ago... and than 3 years ago I bought a collection from a ex-Buck-employee and here I am... Now Buck knives seem to find me... I walk around the swap meet and some one always has a knife to show me... and here we go again... I Love the two I got today... ITE ... :D

and they are?

Thanks for all the interesting comments Fellas!

I'm still thinking that I'm bored with the "excess" and I'm debating if I can live with just 25 knives. I wonder if I can do that...drop down to just 25 knives.

My current favorite knife:

My feeling is if you have a sweetheart like this jigged buff/DM and your actually using it, how many more 110's do you need???

There is a core of about 25 knives that I really enjoy. I think about getting rid of all the rest, but do not want to "take a bath" on them. I also look at the new knives being offered and am often tempted to place the occassional order. I only wish I could carry some of my favorite 110's. As soon as I develop an inside the pocket leather sheath I will. Also, I've recently become fond of the Duke 500...a great little knife!

I have a similar 110 only with ram horn scales. It is really nice. How durable have you found the damascus to be???

Edge holding is probably close to 420HC but it is a wicked cutter and easy to get scary sharp. Finish on the blade has been very good. I really like it as blade material. But I also like Bucks other premium steels esp BG-42!!

Mike use the knife, the DM will hold up just fine for you with normal use.

Hell g, if that was the only knife you owned, youd be doing alright-that is sweet:thumbup:

i've only been at it for a bit over a year now and so far have only bought NIB models since I don't have a memory of a previous model i want to get. but i'm trying to grab versions i like as they come out now and am sure in 15 years or so i'll be trying to find models that i declined on today.

i feel "lucky" to not have been collecting/interested in all these great looking ones from before or else i'd never find all the ones i "need"! i try to get one of each model to use/try/share with others. if i like how it works for me i'll get a 2nd one to "collect" and not use. if i find a series i am particular crazy about (right now the 500, vantages and alphas) i'll get every version i can find. same way with the classics like 110/119/301 that i do "remember" either using or my family using. now if a version i like is discontinued i do tend to buy "several" while available. too bad i missed out on the Kalinga Pros, those do look like they were great.

so far am content with only focusing on those produced since i got interested...except a 124! got to use one of my uncles a while back and it was perfection to me. trying to find one i can "afford". wish they'd make another user version of that.
