Has anyone tried the Wave and NOT liked it?

i dont like the wave. it doesnt always fully open and sometimes it catches on the pocket when i want to take the knife out of my pocket without it opening.

That's exactly the feature that turns me OFF of that model Endura. That wave "rino horn" destroys the lines of the knife. I find it aesthetically unappealing, however functional it may well be. Kind of like an otherwise fine looking woman with a really ugly nose.

I did the "ziptie" thing for about 2 days. Kinda fun but not useful for me. I also agree with those who don't like the knife going backwards if it's needed frontwards. And needing that much SPEED just has to be for self defense.
Unless one is attacked by an enraged apple yelling "PEEL ME ...PEEL ME NOW!"

I've never used a knife for SD, but have heard that the best tactic is to have the knife unseen til inserted. Something I can't see if someone is windmilling a wave.

:)

Hadn't thought of it before, but that Endura wave with the wave ground OFF mite look kinda neat.

I see a lot of Wave enthusiasts are quick to point out "speed of presentation" as their justification. Apparently this is very important to them - but no purpose for the speed is given.

Why do you need to have a blade so quickly?

I got a CQC-8 a couple weeks ago and I really like it. It's my first waved knife, if you don't count the CS Ti-Lite (which can be opened as if it was waved very easily)

I'm actually finding the wave to be a little unreliable when I'm wearing suit pants (which is what I wear 80% of the time) I may have the pivot a little too tight, but I don't like blade wobble. The wave doesn't seem to want to "catch" on thin pockets, unless I really concentrate on what I'm doing. It's not a reflexive action like it is when wearing jeans. With jeans, the deployment is much more reliable.

Although, FWIW, I did draw my knife under stress last weekend, and it worked astonishingly well. As fast as I could blink, I had my knife out and was ready to take care of business. The business? I was walking my dog late at night and a raccoon suddenly jumped out of a dumpster right in front of us, startling me. Pretty tactical, huh? I acted purely out of instinct and was embarrassed, luckily there was nobody around to laugh at me. Though, if it had been a zombie, I would have had him dead to rights. I felt pretty tough in my pajama bottoms and "Brew-Thru" T-shirt. Almost like a ninja.

Haha...a man after my own heart! Looks aside though, I don't like anything catching on my pockets, period. If I am in a situation where I need to draw a blade quickly, it just means that I should have been 'at the ready' much earlier.

moonwilson.... NEVER.... repeat NEVER.....get close enuff to a RACCOON to try....repeat... TRY ... a ..KNIFE on one.

They is nastly lil buggers. And the last one I ....SHOT.... (admittedly with a measly .38 special wadcutter) in the CHEST.... simply ran away.

However, the ...chest shot... was from him standing on his hind legs and ready to GRAPPLE....if necessary.

RACCOONS = TEETH AN CLAWS

combined with speed and amazing strength.

not to get away from the wave discussion, but i love the image of the monster raccoon. my dog went after one last year and got torn up a bit, although by the time i got there the dog (blue heeler) had the raccoon by the neck, while my other dog (40 pounds of very sweet but also freaky central texas mutt) was working at the raccoon's butt. i threw a rock, everybody let go, and the raccoon was up a tree in a flash. the dogs were fine, although the blue heeler has some tough-guy scars on his snout now. i think that may have been the happiest day of his life so far, even better than the time he got into a cat's litter box.

oh yeah, i think the wave's a cool idea, but don't really like the looks much. :)

I didn't get close to the raccoon on purpose. He jumped out right in front of me all of a sudden, in the dark. I reacted to the sound and the sudden movement by pulling my knife. Honestly, I thought I was being attacked by a person, from the noise, but the point was, I had my knife out before my dog even managed to bark. I was totally impressed with the Wave and my reaction speed- even though the threat turned out to be nothing. Fast-draw knifing isn't exactly something I think about or practice much. However, if it had been a real threat, I was ready for it. I have no beef with raccoons, and I wouldn't try to stab one unless it was on me, trying to knaw my leg or something. I wouldn't even let my dog go after it, I didn't want him to get bitten. Dogs are such babies when they get hurt.

My son has a waved Emerson that he loves. Only problem that he has had, was when the tension screw became sl. loose, and the tip-up blade opened and poked thru his pants, and nearly cut him. Easily prevented by periodically checking the screw tension, or loc-tite.

There are two other reasons I like the Wave. One is when I am wearing gloves at work, it is easier to have the knife open when you draw it. The other reason is when your hands are wet, it is a more sure way to open it.

I am looking just at the utility of the Wave without even considering the weapon aspect of it. For me, a knife is a tool first and a weapon second or thrid. I use my knives at work mostly and anything you use a lot every day gets to be second nature. Also, a fraction of a second adds up over the course of a day. The Wave is only a bit faster but anything that gets the knife in my hand with the blade ready to cut right away, is for me.

Now, I need to figuire out how to Wave my Benchmade 921 Switchback! Possibly the best EDC that I have found for work.

Well, by this logic you could ask why have any convenient way to open any blade? Why have thumb studs? Why not have every knife like a leatherman, with steps requiring 2 hands? Reverse the question, why have something slow?

Not sure what the comment about "windmilling open a wave" giving away blade presence in an SD situation is about. I find the wave pretty easy to open on the draw--we are not talking about Balisongs here.

Uh, maybe to keep from giving our 70 to 90 year old tenants a heart attack when I'm working in their apartment? Perhaps to keep from being arrested for opening my mail while standing in line at the post office? There are many places where using the wave feature is just not appropriate, much like assisted openers.

Well, If you are in a situation that requires more discretion, then you can draw the knife without using the wave function (which requires that it be drawn back to catch the notch).

There I was at the church carnival fishing booth helping little boys and girls throw their little lines over the cardboard wall so parents on the inside could put little trinkets on the lines and the kids would reel them back in and shriek with joy. One of the kids caught his line on a staple in the cardboard and was crying he couldn't pull his line back to get a prize.

I whipped out my Wave Endura to help remove the staple, forgetting the wave feature just as the knife opened in a flash and tore my belt open holding up my khaki pants. There I was standing there amongst dozens of little kids and their mothers with my pants falling down around my ankles when I realized my wife had not done the laundry hence i was NOT wearing briefs or boxers and I was fully exposed with my pants down holding a large knife in front of all the little kidlets. As I turned around to explain, my knife caught the tape holding up the cardboard which proceeded to collapse and now I was in full view of the parents inside as well.

After the screams died down and I pulled the taser darts out of my chest I assurred the officers that I had the new Wave knife from Spyderco and it opened by accident thus causing my embarrassment. The officer assured me that now that I confessed to ALSO having a large knife on a school campus I would have plenty of time to write a complain letter to Spyderco...This knife is too efficient and easy to open and in 'three to five years' I will talk to the Spyderco Officials about it.....till then......Piece Out

I like the wave, but it does tear up my pants.
And it's not 100% reliable either...it works great with some of my pants, but not so great with others.

I haven't owned a waved knife yet.

I did put a zip tie on my Spyderco Persian 75 the first day I got it. It's a fast way to open the knife. But it's not 100%. I'd rather be reliable. I took the zip tie off and I've practiced enough with the Spydie to be confident with it, hundreds of times by now, but it doesn't work with gloves.

I'll get an Emerson to give waved a real chance. I also want to check out BM's Axis. But I think the answer is a small fixed blade. I got a CS Super-Edge thinking it'd be a good EDC small fixed, but it's pathetic, a toy.

I'm going to keep buying knives until I find what I want. Needs to be sheeple friendly but instantly opened. I think a fixed will help with the sheeple because the click from opening a folder can scare them

Or perhaps I should stop trying to play the sheeple game and be proud that I'm prepared.
