Has anyone tried the Wave and NOT liked it?

Don't forget

7) the wife gives you grief for the condition of your pants and for looking like a homeless person when you go out. :D

Seriously thats my biggest obstacle. Listen to wife or just stop using it. Gee lets see which one do I pick? She actually bought me a new pair of jeans not long ago with orders as she was handing them to me that these were not for pocket clips or Waves. Its a tough life being a trained husband what can I say.

Never tried a true Wave from Spyderco or Emerson but like many others I have zip tied a knife for fun. One neat feature of most waves is that it can used to open bottles. Also someone with limited mobility in an arm or hand may find the Wave useful. I have little interest in Waved knives but to each his own.

I like the Wave, and wish it were a feature on every knife I owned. I cannot think of a negative to a knife that is instantly open in your hand when you remove it from your pocket.

Add me to the list of those that don't like it. Rather, I don't like it enough to own one. They work great, just don't like having to pull my knife out of the pocket a certain way.

you dont have to pull it out a certain way. With the knife resting at the rear edge of the pocket, pull it out, and it opens. No magic words, witchcraft, or judo moves, it simply opens.

Yup, like I said, I know it works great... Just not my thing. I've tried it, bought it even... then returned it and got a different knife.

comparing a spyderco endura with a zip tie wave and an emerson CQC12 is apples /oranges, it aint the same animal at all.

unless ya are obssesive -compulsive i dont think the wave is any harder on clothes than the pocket clip.

if ya practice withi it (as ya should with anything ya intend to use for SD) opening is very intuitive imho, and i dont see where ya would be any more liable to drop the thing, with practice of course.

EKI's are designed for SD not utility, therefore the need to open the thing fast is part of the game, in fact if ya use a folder for SD the odds are it will need to be opened fast, of course when ya open a can of skoal or a peanut butter cracker, speed isnt so vital and a old slip lock with a 2" blade works just fine, but again, apples /oranges,

its a simple matter to pull it out and not wave them open, that probably doesnt even require practice lol.

if ya dont like them, buy something else, to say they dont do what they are meant to do, and do it well, is simply not a correct statement and is just gonna confuse folks who havent tried it.

I do not own one but have used several different variations. I don't like them all that much myself. Yes they do what they are meant to do but like knives or handguns personal preference and requirements considered, I may want something completely different than the next guy. There is a lot of room to experiment with new designs and hopefully with some different variations for different applications. That being said, Leatherman is a good quality product but not many models suit my needs enough to warrant the price tag.

On the "stressful situation" thought - I actually find the wave Delica more useful in my own hard-use, stressful situations, which are all outdoors-y. For my main uses (backpacking, cutting tinder, dealing with fish) - a lot of the times I need to get my knife out when I'm super-cold, when my fingers are either half frozen, gloved, or both, or when I'm trying to hold a rod and line and a fish and need to get my knife out. In all these cases, changing to a wave really, really, really reduces opening time. Sitting at home, with warm fingers, I can open an axis lock, a spyderhole, and a wave in almost precisely the same amount of time. After hiking 5 miles, in cold sierra night, trying to catch a last trout after sunset, and goddamn cold, the wave is just way easier.

When I got the wave and played around with it at home, it seemed like a cool toy - a little awkward, but just cool. After the end of my first backpacking trip with it, I had the feeling that somebody else reports - if you put it at the back edge of your pocket, it just opens. You don't have to think about it, you don't have to worry about it, it just opens.

I don't carry it to work though.

Quite happy w/ mine. Also, I really like the zip-tie idea for those who don't have it. The clip has done more damage to my pants than the wave.

Yeah, Delica 4 Waved, and I love it. You guys actually recommended it! It's the next best thing to carrying a fixed blade. Except it fits comfortably in the pocket and is legal (in my state).

I tend to use a zip tie. I can rig one on my delicas in a couple of minutes if I feel inclined. Normally, for use around NKP, I just open my delicas with two hands. I figure if you can avoid trouble with your boss it's best to do so.

As I said I would rather not have the knife taken from me or promote unneeded attention to myself.

As my ol' Grandpa used to say.....The more doo dads and gee gaws on somthin....the more somthin can go wrong at the time you need it most.

I have more than a few waved Emersons. I just don't advocate them as a primary self defense folder. I also don't advocate a folder at all for SD unless you have no choice. I have found that a waved knife carried strong side but reverse grip is much faster and stable that reg grip. This allows a better grip and goes right to target.

I do however think that everyone should have at least two knives on them if they are carrying for SD and the reaction side knife should be a EKI Kerambit for reasons that I have expressed before. Here are a few points.

#1 it rides below the belt line and is in the open
#2 the blade goes right to target
#3 in can be easily deployed and retained even when seated

I don't like it. For one, I think it makes the blade look stupid. Secondly, I don't always have pockets on the pants I wear.

Just my opinion.

Not always true...

With some of my pants I can just pull my waved Endura 4 out just as I would any folder, and the blade opens and locks.
But with other pants I must draw the Endura 4 rather sharply backwards to get the waved blade to open and lock.
And with some of my pants the blade does not open at all, or only partially opens and I have to use a wrist-snap to complete the opening and lock the blade in place.

So, I still maintain that the wave is not a 100% reliable opening method.

I don't agree...

I would choose a more complicated Glock 17 over a more simple flint-lock muzzle-loading pistol anyday of the week!

I got my first Wave today, a Delica 4 Wave. And I love it already; it's god fun to play with and it seems to work as expected.

That is an excellent point. I'll go further and say I'd much rather have a pimped out AR-15, with an ACOG and a laser designator on it than a musket. Take that bad boy back to the colonial days and watch jaws hit the deck! (at the risk of being burned as a witch) Progress is a good thing.
