Has anyone used one for outdoor use? Whats your opinion on it?

Is it to small for splitting wood?

I have it as a piggy back in the sheath with my RC 5. It is great for detail work and making fuzz sticks. To answer you question about splitting wood, the handle is short and you would probably hit your fingers, but the grind is a perfect wedge and it should split well.

I've used my Izula pretty extensively for outdoors work, and I've got to say it has taken everything I have thrown at it. Yes, I have used it to baton through wood.

I love my Izula. It has been on my person every day since I got it. When in a situation I need to baton wood, I have larger knives I use for that task. So I never batoned any wood with it, nor do I see a need to baton wood thin enough that a 2 1/2" blade can handle. It will fuz a piece of wood that thin with ease though.

If you're looking for an awesome lil pocket fixed blade or necker; the Izula is my favorite so far.

another vote for the Izula.... it's a great all around little knife... i'm sure it can handle just about anything you ask of it.. mine see's a lot of use... i carry it almost everyday...

I've also carried mine everyday since I've got it. Great little EDC that can handle anything.

Here's the only pic I have of it at the moment:

I agree with everyone else, the Izula is an awesome little knife, and can handle anything you want to throw at it. As far as baton work goes.....it will do decently. I don't say exceptional simply due to the fact that it is a small blade, and I'd personally end up smashing all my fingers if I tried (me clumsy sometimes :p). But for fuzz sticks and just about anything else in the woods it will outperform just about anything else in it's class.

Bottom line: Buy it, you'll never regret it.

Great little knife! I use it for EDC and light hiking. It's a great outdoors knife if you do not want to be carrying a big blade.

It rocks!

I've never split wood with it, but I'm sure one could. It's just a handy little knife. If it wasn't a hassle to carry fixed blades around here (can't be concealed, and it's really hard to carry a knife that small in a way that doesn't conceal it), I'd EDC it.

Great blade shape. Excellent tip. I'm generally not a fan of skeletonized and paracord handles, but it really works on this knife. Lightweight, unobtrusive, and the sheath is secure. And it's a RAT. A lot going for it :D

I don't have an Izula but I do have a similar knife the Swamprat Swampwarden and IMO they are limited when splitting wood by the size of the wood that needs splitting....ie you will not damage the blades but anything over a couple of inch across and you won't have anything to strike with your batton !!!!

Yes, wood that you could baton with something this small most likely doesn't require batoning. Even if you needed to get to "dry" wood (is that possible on wood that small?), you could just strip it and shave it.

Yes you can split wood with it:

But you shouldn't need to (picture it as a whole stick, not batoned):

I like mine a whole lot. It sharpened up very well. I have used it to carve quite a few wooden spoons, including hollowing the bowl. This is a good test to see if a knife handles well.

I'd probably reach for my RC-4, or my machete if I needed to split wood. But the Izula is always in my pocket no matter where I go. Not much else to add that others haven't covered already. As with all RAT cutlery, great no nonsense blade. I had to get an extra just in case they stopped making them for some odd reason.

yes you can split wood with it, not as easy since it has a short blade but you can do it.

I have cut pounds and pounds of chicken, beef, pork and fish with it. It cuts like mad. It does everything a small fixed blade should do, I don't know how else to say it. One of the cool pics Jeff put up on the website months and months before the knife was released was him batoning the knife through a limb, I think it was a cherry tree, can't remember. That sold it for me because it was tough, not necessarily because I am big on "batoning." If you have to do that, fine. But I would never judge a knife pass or fail on batoning as something you must be able to do in the wild.

Thanks Guys for the input.

One last question, I will be carrying this while mountain biking were I sweat a lot and will be near salt water. How fast does 1095 rust?

Will it hold until I clean the knife a day or two later?

Thanks

It rusts pretty fast, so just make sure wipe it with oil after use and you will be fine. I use mineral oil (sometimes called butcher block oil) because it is cheap and it works.
