Has anyone used a Rat Cutlery Izula

I've had my RC4 on the beach and have actually used it to poke and prod things in tidepools. Cleaned it off when I got home later that day and it was fine. Just make sure you rinse and dry it after use. As it's been pointed out, sharpening or use will remove edge rust. If you're really worried ( since you'll be out for more than a day), you can bring a rag with mineral oil on it and wipe it down after uses.

yes you can split wood with it, not as easy since it has a short blade but you can do it.

MRpink, it looks like you knife (top on in the picture) has the coating stripped off of it.

How did you do it and does it make it cut better?

The Izula is awesome! You should get one just because. Even if it won't do one thing, you will end up using it for plenty more!

I have an Izula and a Swamp Warden. I prefer the Swamp Warden because it is slightly larger and came much sharper. Of course Swamp Wardens are twice the price and hard to come by now.

It's one of the original prototypes and they didn't come with coating. If you want, you could buy some paint stripper from the store and just soak it in there and the paint will come right off.

I use it all the time and just wipe it on my pants before I clean it later at home. Only time it ever got tiny rust spots was when I took it crabbing at the beach. Everyone was using it to cut stuff soaked in salt water, I didn't clean it for about a week. You can see the dark spots where it had some rust, I just cleaned it up with a scotch brite pad. If you keep it coated, you should be fine.

Stripping the coating and using gun blue works great. Reduced friction during the cut and you can reapply the coating whenever you want! :D

I suppose if you were desperate enough you could put a stick through the hole at the end of the handle and baton on the handle itself. A little crazy and dangerous, but hey in a pinch.

Are there any differences between the prototype and production model besides the coating and saber vs flat grind?

Thanks Guys for the input.

One last question, I will be carrying this while mountain biking were I sweat a lot and will be near salt water. How fast does 1095 rust?

Will it hold until I clean the knife a day or two later?

Thanks

I've been carrying my Izula with the MercHarness (figure 8 550-cord...ala "manbra":D). I've taken it mountain bike riding and it was quite humid/hot and was pretty soaked carrying it under the arm. I don't think you'll get enough rust to worry about for several days. However, all I do is a quick strop at home and it's fine. Another technique is to wipe it down with a silicone cloth (not good if you're going to use if for food though), and it will last a loooong time.

I'm really torn now. I've been carrying my Fallkniven WM-1 and now the Izula is getting more carry time. I'll continue to use both; for me, they are the perfect neck/harness carrying knives!

I really need to try out this MercHarness, seems like a viable alternative to neck carry.

When at the Blade Show I got to check out teh RAT knives. Very Solid knives!!! I'd grab one any damn day :)

Cool think about the non handled knives is that they slip easily inside pouches or gear.

You can actually just try out a simple loop of 550 cord with the knife sheath fed through the grommets...fold it into a figure eight and slip it on. I prefer the MercHarness (which you could make youself) and it's much more comfortable for me than neck carry. Just make sure your sheath has good rentention. You can wear it under a T-shirt much more discreetly than neck carry. Also as Brian stated about the non-handled Izula, it carries very flat.
