Has exposed clip ever gotten you unwelcome attention from police?

Never. I carry polished clipped folders mostly and have had nothing but compliments by other knife carriers.

I do agree that your personal style combined with your environment are a huge factor.

Yeah, several years ago at Fort McHenry (Baltimore) I got grief for a Benchmade in one pocket and a Surefire light in the other. Two park rangers with guns were concerned about me having a knife and a flashlight. The one ranger was real concerned that the light had crenelations (Ed2) on the head of it. I'm clean cut, active duty military, wearing a polo and khaki's, standing with my wife, SIL, and BIL. Yeah, I'm a real threat to society with a pointy flashlight and a std (non auto) knife.

I guess they didn't want to mess with the drug dealers or gang members that were about 300yrds away.

I really think they just look for the easy money. Going after real criminals would be work and you may get hurt.

Reminds me of another good reason I hate md.

Last guy I approached ended up having one of those inexpensive folding razor knives in his pocket, and wasn't a knife nut at all.
Same thing here...to add to it, is the guy was a police officer.
I generally don't see people with a knife in their pocket; but if I do, I look to see if it's a higher end knife or not. Hard to go by just looking at the clip, though. It also depends on the person and location. I'm not one to ask strangers about their knives.

I was once approahced by a LEO for...something unrelated...and he immediately reached over and took my knife from my pocket upon making contact with me. We had a cordial interaction and he had no problem with the knife until I asked for it back... Then he decided it was a switchblade and he'd have to "show it to the captain to be sure it was legal," so if I wanted it back I should stop by the station tomorrow.

Guess what. That knife never made it to the station. The officer would not return my calls. Nobody knew anything about it at the station and nobody cared.

I'm still upset about the principle of the whole thing. He basically stole my knife. It was a knock off Kershaw assisted folder, and those things were immensely poular at the time so he probably thought he scored a nice $100+ knife. I paid around $5 for it so I'm not too upset about losing it, I just don't like the way I lost it.

I would've raised hell...

Agree.

Personally, I keep my pants pulled up over my ass and that seems to keep me out of trouble.

Haha tell me about it. I'm 15 and I've gotten grief before. But not much, I am pretty clean cut and try not to do anything stupid. I did get stopped by a westminster police officer once and got searched by her. She found my AFCK and missed my mini- griptilian. She thought I was crazy for carrying "such a lethal knife". But other than that, not too much trouble. She wasn't happy but she eventually gave me the AFCK back after I recited as much of the penal code as I could :D. Most people don't expect that from a 15 year old i guess :)

I was working on that but karma kinda beat me to it. That officer was on the front page of one of the local journals a week or two later with his face all bloodied and looking pathetic. Apparently he said something he shouldn't have to a couple of college girls and they disarmed and beat him.

I figured that was enough.

And yes, I saved a copy of that journal. :D

I always try to carry so the clip is visible, so the knife is not concealed. Basically, anything with an edge can get you charged if concealed and the cop catches you at it.

Even with your concealed firearm permit.

I have never been stopped for it. And often, I have open carried a knife with up to a 5 inch fixed blade. Heck, once a last summer in Utah, I carried an 11 inch bladed fixed blade with just the handle showing in my bag.

It would depend on the laws in your area.

+1 Know the laws and know the area. If you're visiting NYC or Atlanta then I wouldn't bring a knife. If you're in Idaho or Oklahoma then no one is going to bother you.

Its tough here in NYC - police actively LOOK for clips as knives must be TOTALLY concealed. I have been stopped twice in a subway station for a clip showing - however they were flashlights, not knives :D

I now deep-pocket carry my EDC when here in NYC bc you can either get a ticket, lose the knife or both - one of my friends got his knife taken, no ticket and the other got his knife taken AND a ticket. One of my buddies took a lot of sh*t from the cop saying it was a too easy to flick open - it was an axis lock BM.

I've stopped pocket-carrying anything but SAK and lockback Spydercos as the "gravity knife" definition is pretty open to interpretation here and its just not worth it. Besides, if a 3" delica cant get an EDC task done here in NYC, you shouldnt be using a knife for the job anyway :D

Don't know if it's living in the South, if it's living in a very military area (eastern NC), or looking like Santa Claus, but I never have trouble with police about a knife. I see other people all the time with knives clipped to a pocket or on their belt. Looks like working tools to me. I don't usually ask them about theirs. There's a lot of stuff I might be a geek about -- I'll talk firearms all day long if it comes up -- but just wouldn't think to ask what knife they're carrying.

Never had an issue. Surprised to hear so many people have. Yet another reason not to live in a major metro area.

Haha. Can't bring a Knife to Blade. Hilarious.
