Hats off................to Opinel

I came to this party late, but my first reaction was “INOX”, before I saw the other responses. It is a shame that Opinel does not put Carbone blades on their special woods or handles, like the Slim or the garden knife.
I seem to remember reading that they only use stainless with the exotic woods because the oils in some of those woods will stain the carbon steel.

OMG! You are the genuine article, kudos to you!! Is it true there are only certain foreign branches that the Legion respects with a salute?

This really isn’t the place for me to discuss my experiences, and I regret bringing it up :(, sorry. I just thought it was appropriate to the discussion because my first Opinel figured so prominently in it. After a while you begin to think this forum is just for the regulars, and forget anybody can see it.

No apology necessary. I'm sorry I made you feel off.

I found its better to talk about my service when it comes up rather than bottling it in,but we are all different.
A lot of the time I forget and when I see photos I think its someone else its hard to believe its myself.
Anything can trigger memory's as your post did in me but not in a bad way.

What you told us before was very interesting and informative and it wasn't bragging.

I couldn't get very much from my Grandfather at all (he was on the convoys in WW2) and I regret I will never know what he saw and did.
He couldn't stand a bluffer or blow hard though and would let his displeasure be known when we where at the bar.

My old neighbour who was imprisoned by the NAZIs in a concentration camp told me that he had told me things he hadn't told his family or friends, he had held it in all his life.
One squaddie to another is always easier.
Most of the old guard did not speak of what they had done, it was just the very reserved/modest English way.

The N°09 is still getting a workout on the farm. I'm putting up a new sliding door in the back of the barn and the carpenter pencils need frequent sharpening. I trimmed some leather straps, opened feed bags, cut baling twine, scored some lumber, and did some other tasks I have forgotten. Oh, I cut my cold steak and potato lunch with it! That was satisfying!

Here we are resting from the heat.

Sounds like a well earned rest😁

Sorry for the thread diversion ;) Back to Homage to Opinel. This Horn handled fillet knife, made from a single piece of Blonde striped horn in the same way its wooden cousins are, is my biggest Opinel. Longer than a No.9 and shown here with a giant Pinecone also from France, picked up off the road years ago.

What number Opinel do they call this one?

Zieg

The Zieg The Zieg Not absolutely sure but I think it's a No.10. Look for Opinel effilé en corne (horn handled) This I got some years ago and was a limited edition in a very nice wooden box. It was quite a plain Blonde on arrival but with years has darkened a bit with very good stripes in it. Each piece is totally individual, they do offer dark Brunette Horn too from time to time and also in cheaper form with the usual wooden handles.

Thanks, Will
