Hats off................to Opinel

Chui Chui That's a beautiful Opinel yet practical

A wonderful area for a holiday but some tough hills for the bikes ! Good time of year as it won't be as oppressively hot in Portugal as in July . I like the Redwines from there, rather underrated but like with most 'minor' wine producing countries they wisely keep the best for themselves. However, never been keen on Port nor Sherry from Spain, it's great in cooking though:D

Muito Obrigado, Will

Lovely………..cheers, Will 👍🏻😎

Yes, Port/Sherry not really my thing either, however, we did a Port tasting in Porto which we thoroughly enjoyed - Vintage the clear winner.
Much red meat and red wine consumed thus far, going for fish this evening.!

I know I'm late. My first Opinel has just arrived.

Congrats! Sometimes the edges need a little love out of the box, but they’re very easy to get very sharp.

- suitable companion while cycling along Douro Valley in Portugal

Cool looking Opinel, and aesthetically well-matched with the countryside.

Will, every time you show that one it makes me almost buy one. That beautiful olive wood really makes up for the stainless blade. 😉

Thanks! I have a lot of fun with it and it's easy to sharpen.

That padouk will turn a beautiful dark brown with UV exposure. A bit like cocobolo.

I am curious how the color change.

The older I get, the more I like simple knives. This won't be my last Opinel. The next one will have olive wood handles. Not sure bout the size, 6, 8 or 9. Maybe one of each size :D

Well, it might not... depending on if they sealed it. I've no idea if the more premium woods come sealed but I do know that the regular ones definitely come sealed with a shellack of sorts. The most beautiful aspect of padauk wood is how it ages, darkens, and smooths out.

Opinel says on it's homepage, that the regular ones are sealed with varnish. They don't write this in the description of the premium wood knives. Mine doesn't look sealed.

A man with only one Opinel really knows how to use it. 🙂

If I wasn’t so attached to my current EDC, I could probably just carry and use an Opinel #8 for everything. Granted, most of my knife use is discretionary - hobbies, outdoor activities, etc., but I’m pretty sure it would do 99% of what I need.

Maybe we should start an “Opinel No. 8 carbone only, for a month” challenge, and see who makes it. Or is that too dangerous? It might expose how little we actually use our knives, or maybe reveal how many of them are superfluous…
