Hats off................to Opinel

A question for the long time Opinel users: Is there a way to loosen up the pivot on these? Mine is really stiff, or is that just the way they are? I don't expect to be able to flick it open, but the blade on mine fights the whole way out. I already spread the locking collar apart, because it was very difficult to even get it move. Now if I could just get the blade to come out easier.

I know! It's a $17 knife. What do I expect? But if I can get it working better, I know it'll get alot more use.

One of mine arrived much like that. It ended up just breaking in on its own.

They stilp fluctuate in tightness with the seasons/humidity

jmh33 jmh33 Great arrival there  kind of envious as my Bubinga version (another hardwood) has an etched blade not stamped like yours. Got to find an Olive one...

Nice!
I might "need" a #6. The #8 isn't bad, but it's just a little bit bigger than I like for pocket carry. The #7 is fine, but the 6 might be even more betterer.:)
And it's not like they cost a whole bunch.

You definitely "NEED" a No.6!! ๐Ÿ˜‚
At first I was a little surprised at the size of the 6.. But after pocketing it a few days i really like it..
And this thing is CRAZY sharp too..

I know a lot of folks consider the No 6 to be small, but it's about the same size as a 91 mm SAK, with a bigger blade.
I really like the mighty mite No 6. I wish they'd do a wharncliffe/sheepsfoot/lambsfoot version.

I am a small knife guy 90% of the time, but Iโ€™ve only had the No 8. It was my big knife for years. I got the number 6 and didnโ€™t like it. Maybe never gave it a chance. I think my brain just associated Opinel with big knife and I couldnโ€™t make the switch.

My first Opinel was a No.7. I still have an old one which might be the very knife. Because it came first, I thought of it as the definitive Opinel size, or maybe the only Opinel size. I do not use that No.7, and have left it unmolested. Then I learned there was another size, the No.8, which was easier to work with. I put No.8s in the tool kits of several motorbikes.

Years later, when I became enthusiastic about knives, I tried a 6, and found it could be easily modified to be comfortable in the pocket, so now I carry one daily, modified for comfort. The 6 has been up to everything that has confronted it in daily use, although I can see where a larger handle might be better suited for longer sessions.

I havenโ€™t carried a No.7 in years. I bought one a couple of years ago, and started work on it, altering the new-style lock ring to make it work the way I wanted. The project has not gone any further. Some slow, rainy afternoon, I might finish the handle and press the knife into service to see if it carries as easily as the No.6.

80 bucks. That will get you dinner for two at a moderately nice restaurant. Pick a night to go out, then stay home and open a can of smoked oysters, eat them on some crackers, and call it even.
