Hats off................to Opinel

Try this: Rub a bit of beeswax on the blade then put a drop of mineral oil on. Smear it all together thoroughly with your fingers and gently wipe off any excess. Makes a nice, long lasting protective coating.
They also sell this combination as a food safe wood finish. It’s creamier and easier to spread but it’s the same thing pre mixed.

Chui Chui Great 'improvisation' 😻 But nothing left for the Cats???

The Olivewood has some fine stripes and I'm really delighted with it, so much for so little and so light in the pocket.

Although much of the charm of Opinels for me is their simplicity and "function-over-form", I couldn't resist the visual appeal of this laminated birch Opinel No. 8 that arrived recently. Haven't used it yet, but I see no reason for it not to be functionally equivalent to the other Opinels I have. (Most of my previous Opinels have carbon steel blades while the new laminated birch model has Inox blade, so maybe that difference might lead to different performance?)

I do like the handle😎
The 12c27 holds a great edge & is easy to hone up.

Those are Opinel's biggest attractions for me. The 06 & 07 are about the right size for my needs. They're small & lightweight. You hardly notice they're in your pocket, and they just cut stuff. After "loosening up" the lock rings, and pivots, I sanded a notch in all mine to make them "pinchable." Big improvement!

Fine looking Olivewood Opinels, gents. Very sophisticated. 🧐

Good looking knife, GT. I also generally prefer carbon steel Opinels, but I have a few in stainless, and have found it pretty comparable when it comes to sharpening, holding an edge, etc.

Am off to France later this summer for a break, and of course, you can’t just take one, can you…

Shall be canoeing, so had to add the water sports version too…………then my hand slipped on the keyboard and some pouches were added, along with an Oak No9, and hopefully to arrive soon, the posh version with the African woods handle.

The cutting edge to the blue one wasn’t great, so a hard strop now sees it hair pippin’ …

Thanks for the compliments, Mitch and Barrett, and also for your input on Opinel's stainless steel.:thumbsup::cool:

That is AWESOME!! 😙
John 😁
Many thanks John and thanks to Ironbut Ironbut . Been really pleased with the Olivewood No.6 asked the shop owner in France to pick a striped one for me and got a wonderful 'Tiger'. 6 is a decent size in the pocket and weighs nothing. If I were keeping a 'BOTY' type thing- Buy/Best Of The Year it would likely carry the award despite far more expensive knives coming in and decent presents. The Olivewood has drawn compliments from people who never otherwise notice knives in a positive way too.

Regards, Will

- just arrived by courier, very nice indeed, very happy.

Polished blade this time, still needs a sharpen/hone to get it up to standard.

Guess being born/brought up in Africa has kindled my love of woods, and these are really cool they way they've been spliced together, not just skin deep.

Another good'un, Opinel....!

I have carried opinels off and on over the last 10-15 yrs. They are affordable to a fault, and cut like none other, so easy to sharpen and take a scary sharp edge quickly. I love using them, but I don’t care as much for carrying them, they feel big in the pocket which bothers me moreso than a flatter knife.
However, if I could only carry an opinel for life I wouldn’t feel lacking for anything and would get used to the pocket bulge after a while.
I like them so much I bought the box set with all the sizes, I don’t use any of those, just have them to admire, plenty of others I do carry and use.

I need to pick up a model with fancy wood next. I did buy the utility model with the bits in the handle and wire stripper notches, it’s a nice model, but the notches sacrifice too much blade length IMO and it’s a pocket hog. They should have put only one wire stripper notch instead of two, I strip a fair amount of wire and don’t see the usefulness of the triangle shaped notch.

......Opi do some great pouches, Brian - none of those any good for you.....?

Those I've shown in my post#152 are very good and apart from the mustard coloured one, are pretty cheap. The brown one can go horizontal on the belt, or vertical, and the light-brown canvas one goes vertical on the belt and also has a very useful dangler clip for belt-loop/whatever.

Yes, they'd be too bulky in my pockets too. The blue watersports one will go on a neck-dangler so easy enough to grab quickly...
