Have beer and popcorn II... Memorial Day thread. What's the best war movie???

Probably better classified as a war drama, but still very good... The Hurt Locker

"Murphy's War" is a forgotten gem. Peter O'Toole is a British sailor named Murphy who is the only survivor after a Nazi submarine sinks his ship and massacres the crew off the coast of Venezuela in the waning days of WWII. Murphy is obsessed with finding and destroying the sub, which is hiding in the the jungle-clad Orinoco River. Beautifully photographed, superbly acted by O'Toole and a small supporting cast. The scenes with Murphy teaching himself how to fly a Grumman J2F Duck floatplane are exhilarating.

These are my favorite war movies:

1. Saving private Ryan
2. Black Hawk Down
3. Platoon
4. The Patriot
5. Enemy at the gates
6. Braveheart
7. Gladiator
8. 300
9. Sniper (Just the 1st one)
10. Lord of the Rings (the action is great when they are killing orcs)

Most all of the good ones have been mentioned but another good one is The Enemy Below. I think the old classics are better because even though they may not have the same desensitized audience shock factor and over the top special effects, they are the ones I remember watching growing up and so, have a more profound effect on me.

Another Mel Gibson one, We were Soldiers, My brother was Air Cav in 67-68 and to see what went on with them in this movie it is astounding that any of them made it back alive.

RIP Boo.

Not my most fav, but a good one is "Stalingrad". Think its Bulgarian or Romanian???

The Longest Day
In Harms Way
Patton
12 O'clock High
Sargent York
Apocalypse Now

The Devils Brigade

In addition to many others that have already been mentioned, these are among my favorites:

"They were Expendable"

"In Harm's Way" (I see Forager sniped me on this one, but it is my all-time favorite)

"Force Ten from Navarone"

"The Guns of Navarone"

"Where Eagles Dare"

"The Eagle has Landed"

I cant pick one, these are my favs.

Battle of the Bulge
The Big Red One

Kelly's Hero's
The Dirty Dozen
The Great Escape
Saving Private Ryan
Platoon

EDIT: I forgot "The Longest Day" Dang, That's probably my favorite and I almost forgot it.

Probably better classified as a war drama, but still very good... The Hurt Locker

Good call Jaxx :thumbup:,,,, Loved the Hurt Locker!

OK, here's my top 3:

BraveHeart

Full Metal Jacket

Thin Red Line

Not a movie, but a TV series from the BBC/PBS that I enjoyed: "Danger UXB". Its about a British army group learning to to disarm/defuse UneXploded Bombs during the Blitz on London. As to movies, I agree with most of the choices mentioned and would add "All Quiet on the Western Front" as a classic WW1 flick.
Pete

I've seen most (Except for some the "non U.S.") of those listed, and liked most. Didn't see my fave listed yet? "The Siege of Firebase Gloria," w/ R. Lee Ermy!
