And when I was talking about relationship I'm talking not about stress vs strain relationship but longevity vs strain.

Oh yeah and I'm so glad you can come into this forum too :)

Without getting into any other problems with these polls, right now the failure rate implied by the poll is 10% (21:180). No company would manufacture a knife that had a failure rate that high, and if they tried to, they'd soon be out of business, doors shut, bankrupt.

Hmm....maybe not exactly 99%, but that is kinda just thrown out there. For things like this I tend to be more trusting. I feel like the knife-loving and gun-loving community in general are trustworthy men and women, often with a good deal of old fashion values.

All in all the accuracy seems pretty good to me since it goes with what I would have estimated (roughly 10%) based on hanging around the knife forums for over a decade now.

If it was some thing like 2% or 40% it would seem more fishy. The weakness of the springs and likelihood of bad batches over the years seems evident. The results coincide with that, off and on reports, and the fact that some play flippy, spinny with knives like crazy and others fear even putting finger-prints on expensive knives.

We could still make it +/- 2% to bring it to 8-12% accounting for people just goofing around.

Never! 7 Benchmade Axis locks (some Nitrous & Axis Assist) have never failed on me yet >3 years of openings. :)

I still don't think the poll is entirely accurate in that people who HAVE had the springs break are more likely to look at this thread and post than those that have had a perfect track record with benchmade axis locks. I'm sure that a lot of people who have owned or still owned axis locked benchmades haven't posted or at least put their vote in because they simply skimmed past this thread if they haven't had any problems.

I'm one of the lucky ones who hasn't had a spring break though *knock on wood* :D

Count me in. The spring on my 556 Mini Grip snapped right in the middle. It seemed to happen when I dropped it onto my laminate floor from about 3 feet in the air. Obviously that shouldn't be nearly enough to damage a high quality knife. Though for the two or so months leading up till now I had been obsessively opening and closing it whenever I was just sitting around watching TV or doing whatever. Probably cycled it well over a thousand times. Even still seems pretty weak for it to bust so quickly.

I'm not quite sure what I want to do with it. I'm considering sending my 580 barrage in since it has some up and down blade play so I could just them together or I could try my own fix and have my knife ready right quick.

Edit: On closer inspection the spring on the non-broken side looks like its ready to snap at any time as well. Instead of being a nice round curve there is a slight kink and split in the middle of the spring. Two broken springs? That's weak man.

What is all of that stuff in there? It rminds me of dried up super glue. I don't mean to offend bt did you attempt some sort of repair in there? Maybe it's the reason your spring/s broke.

I am bad about playing with my knives WAY too much. This may be why my BM 530 AND BM 940 springs have given up after only a couple months of use. I can't find my 530, but will send my 940 in to Benchmade this week. Will update on their service, which I've heard is very good.

I've got a couple of 710s that are older than some of the people posting here and have a zillion cycles on them - never had a broken spring.

I've never had one break and had several AXIS lock knives. I also keep mine pretty clean, though. Maybe that helps?

11%!

That does not seem like a good ratio?

It does not seem like a ratio that accurately reflects real world, actual experience by users. Think about it...if this were anywhere near accurate, Benchmade would spend every part of every work week dealing with returns and warranty claims. ;)

No. I have owned many Benchmades but the longest carry was a 710 for 5+ years. It was used daily. I cut a lot of acidic foods with it, dropped it in the dirt many times, and wasn't always prompt with cleaning it. Never had any problems of any kind with the lock.

Even if it did break, it's just a spring. I can replace it for negligible cost, time, and effort. IMO axis locks are too simple to fix to complain about, even if one ever did fail.

Yes actually, once on my Benchmade Mini-Grip 556 SBKOD, but I had gone in the ocean a couple times(didn't rinse out after...) and swimming in pools and yea :(, but that was only once and I've had another Mini-Grip 556SBKOD, Regular Grip 551SBK, Full size Barrage 580BK, 710SBK, and now Bedlam 860BK and all work great and have been flicked open thousands of times and used pretty hard without failure :D

Broke both springs in my 930 and 940. Last 3 breaks occured within a week. Heartbreaking. Felt like a cruel joke. Rarely carried the 940, maybe less than 15 times. My brother broke a spring in his presidio after about a year of carry as well. I have very little confidence in the axis lock.

Nope, never had a problem. Kind of funny because I' ve been paranoid about the possibility of them breaking:D

so i sent all 3 of my benchmades with broken springs in about 2 weeks ago. Today i received them back in prime condition. BKC repaired, cleaned, oiled, and sharpened my knives, no questions asked. Although i wasn't the least bit happy about breaking those locks with such little use, Benchmade has redeemed themselves by making good on their warranty. I urge anyone who was in the same situation as me to send their knives in. I had partially disassembled one of them and it did not matter. Thank you Benchmade.
