Hawaii Knife Life - daily use for work and play

Great post. The only thing that would make it better would be some grass skirted wahines showing the knives!

100 percent agree!

Hey MolokaiRider, hope you stay safe during the storm.

You like Pepper?

Thank you, appreciate it. Pepper is a great band!

Yall will be on the heavy wind/rain side of things. Batton down the hatches and be safe.
Hope yall ride it out with minimal damage.

Thanks 3fifty7, everyone’s getting pretty nervous around here.

doing some reading on the storm.....two things caught my eye.....one that the main highway on the south coast of Molokai would be come impassible. the other that govt officials have stated that storm shelters are last resort and couldn't handle winds greater than 40mph. which kinda shocked me as we build houses for 180mph and 115 mph wind speeds range, depending on where ya are in the state.

wishing for the best for y'all. let us know y'all came through okay after powers back up and things get back to normal......

Thanks jbmonkey. Yeah, if it hits we are in trouble for sure. It’s kinda silly as our local “shelter” is am elementary school that’s a few feet above sea level in a flood zone! And it’s gym has ceiling high windows!

Molo-

I hope everyone in Hawaii rides out the storm with minimal damage. Looks like tons of rain, not terrible winds is coming your way. Will this storm affect your volcano situation?

It should be some good surfing weather. When I lived in S. Florida the surfers were always out off the beaches before the hurricanes were scheduled to hit.

Well we dodged the storm! Whew! I had some time to spin by a few of the farms trees to check on the breadfruit and avocado development. Still a bit to early to harvest so I cut a few Ti leaves to bring home to see if my wife wants to wrap LauLau.

I took the Mini Griptillian in 154cm sheepsfoot. It’s a handy little pocket knife even with the three and a half finger grip. It carries well and the sheeps foot makes a decent slicer.

Yes we were lucky. Only received light rain and wind, thank goodness. We spent a good portion of the morning taking plywood off windows.

The Big Island took the worst of it. In fact in Maui, some areas did not get rain but just wind. A few brush fires were started and several thousand acres and a few houses caught fire. But all in all we were very fortunate.

Good to hear man, saw reports of 36”+ of rain in areas. Considering the terrain the runoff has to be amplified exponentially.

Yes some people had to deal with quite a bit of flooding, but fortunately nothing too bad.

Glad to hear all is well! Damn I miss me some giant Hawaiian advocados!! So delicious.

Thank you Murphjd25, I appreciate it. And I totally agree...Avocados are delicious!

Glad to hear all is well. Beautiful thread you’ve created here. Easily one of my favorite and most anticipated views.

Mahalo Blkfrncis, I appreciate the kind words!

Glad you were not affected by then Lane.
Looks like Hilo got the worst of the rain.
Here in Kailua Kona, it was almost nothing.

I’m glad you came out ok Miso! It was spooky seeing that big storm coming at us, but it looks like we were blessed with a near miss. Aloha!

Mahalo!
I was able to drive up to Waimea and saw some nice custom knives at the farmer's market there.
Waipi'o valley was pretty wet but great.
Good times!

Lucky! Waipi’o is certainly beautiful! Was lucky to visit Big Island a few times. People drive really fast!

You are not in the big island, were you affected by that amount rain? Sorry, missed above comment about near miss. Still any trouble?i did not know Hawaii grew avocados.

Thanks for the concern, we got pretty lucky! Yes we are able to grow quite a variety due to good heat. We just have to fight insect and disease pressure since there are no winters to kill off insect populations.

I'm glad everyone is okay, and really like your pictures. I'm still trying to figure out how to post such good pics from my PC to BF. Sharpening a good knife is a whole lot easier I can tell you.

Thank you! Well I can say sharpening is certainly more therapeutic! I just take pictures with my phone, downsize them with the edit feature, then use the “Upload a File” feature that comes with membership.

wow y'all can drive on at least one beach there. we used to be able on many on the east coast here, but they've curbed that down.

glad storm missed ya.

Thanks jbmonkey! We shouldn’t drive on beaches but this one is pretty far off the beaten path. In hindsight I don’t think I’d do it again, but boy was it fun!

I won a bid to clear some overgrown Elephant grass and started on it today. This stuff is strong like rope and was taking forever with a weed eater, so I broke out the trusty Tramontina and went to work. These things are so light that I don’t fatigue as quickly as with a larger blade. That said... I don’t think I’ll bid on this type of work anymore. This grass has small nettles all over them. I’m literally in pain!
