Heavy Duty Folders - ZT, SMF, CRK, ER, etc.

knifeworks is a forum dealer.

edit: aromatic I got you dude. there were 2 posts about knifeworks being reliable, I agree as I have ordered from them myself. I was just affirming those statements.

Heavy duty folders? I think Spyder Mini Manix, SS Poliwog, Kershaw Packrat, JYD2 CB, ZT205, and my Zsolt Ideal G fits the bill...

I love my Mini Manix and wholeheartedly agree, however after personally seeing that Extreme Ratio and seeing it after someone has kicked the shit out of it the Ratio is far better.

Spyderco should of beefed up the existing lock like the ER one for the new Manix instead of going to the fruity ball lock.

Sorry I just hate that lock.

These are the kind of kick butt threads that keep me coming back as I learn, slowly buy and create my collection. Tres kewl!!! The pics motivate me for sure.

Then again...as I say in the gun world. Just because you have the means...doesn't mean you should buy that ultimate custom 1911 as your first piece or two an example. It should be an acquired taste that you build and yearn for over time.

Learning lads. SOG and Gerbers are my level now. Spyderco and Benchmark are the next learnings...then maybe some of these custom coolies!

I dont know about that dude. Im turning 21 tommorrow and I sure as hell wont be drinking bud light D:

btw if people want to buy a 6 grand custom 1911 as their first gun its probably not going to be used for shooting and you wont make any inroads trying to suggest something more "reasonable" to them. for collectors (of which I consider myself to be primarily though I do use knives) it doesnt matter if its "too good" for them whatever that even means.

the zt series is awesome, have two of them zt 0301 and the 350, i edc both and i am going to get a holster for the 0301 and then i will not have to worry about the weight.

Kershaw warranties cover the knife, not the owner. If you're the second or the tenth owner of a 0301, and you have a problem, Kershaw will take care of it.

The Kershaw warranty is stated on their website and says it is for the original purchaser, however there is no warranty card to be sent in and the procedure for obtaining warranty service does not require that you send in a receipt so there is no way for them to know if you are the original purchaser.

I'm not arguing and I'm glad to hear this but I am just stating what is printed in the paperwork that came with the knife which I expect is what I will be held to if it came down to it and they said my used knife was not under warranty. Here is what it says about this on the paperwork that came with my 300.

"...(Of course, normal wear, abuse such as prying with the knife. or neglect are excluded from this non-transferable warranty.) For warranty service, please return product via UPS or insured mail. Include your name, address, telephone number, proof of purchase (sales slip), and a short explanation of the warranty service requested to the address below. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery."

If that is not their actual policy or if it has changed it since I bought the knife then that is great to hear. The knife that came with this info has a birth date of Dec 08.

Let's just say if you have a problem, email or call them. If they don't make it right, I'll buy your broken 030x. I'm that sure of how you will be treated. ;)

My three heavy duty knives would include my Strider AR, ZT0205KW, and black G-10 Tyrade. I have a ZT0300 but it lies inside a pouch, inside my drawer. Not that I don't like it, I just am not fond of the G10/titanium construction method. I've no doubt that it would hold up, just me being perculiar...re: anal!:)

I had my ZT0205KW apart last night to clean up, and decided while it was down I would go ahead and polish the liner area, washer's, pivot, and blade area where they all come together. Had done this before, but this time I took my time. Used some 1000 grit wet/dry, followed by some polishing compound, and ended up with a polishing wheel on my dremel bringing out my reflection! A drop of miltec on the pivot and a drop on each side of the blade, followed by putting the washer on and the knife back together resulted in a very, VERY smooth opening blade. I like a tighter than usual pivot, and sometimes that can cause a little hitch in the blade when opening, but this one has no hitch, only a smooth as glass pivot that allows the blade to drop nicely into lockup, without a big "SMACK". Did my Strider AR the same way a year ago and it reacts the very same way...just a nice drop into lockup without a lot of force hitting the blade stop. I'm guessing that the large diameter pivots on the ZT's, and the AR also help this out.

A lot of real heavy duty folders shown and discussed here, just like I like 'em!

Btw, Shanklick, I saw where you wrote that the weight of your folders does not bother you, and I am the same way. I would rather have it heavy as to real light because it has a really solid feel with a bit of weight to it.

Another thing about the warranty, if you have any trouble do as SPXTrader suggested and call Kershaw. This company takes GREAT pride in their product, and if you have a problem they are going to rectify, (as long as not obvious abuse). I have fiddled around and stripped the screws and really marred up the handle standoffs of the first ZT0200 I had, and Kershaw sent out about a dozen screws and 6 new standoff's. Mentioned this on a Monday and had the part's that Saturday! Some of the best CS around!!:thumbup::thumbup:

I am no doubt a Kershaw kool-aid drinker. Most of my folders are made by them. I have always heard about their great CS but have never needed to use them yet. That was the main reason I have purchased some used knives made by them even after what I read in the paperwork with new Kershaw purchases about non-transferable warranties.

My 300 is stored away now as well but it is only because I use the 301. ;) Just curious about what you don't like about G-10 and titanium contruction method? It seems like it is getting the job done as well as I could desire.

I was just going by the directions on the KAI Website which says nothing about sending in a receipt for warranty service.

First and foremost, I'm simply anal! I have no doubt that this construction method works as there are too many reputable manufactures using it for it not to work. I'm just an old dog traditionalist that wants both his handles made from the same material. I do like the fact that Kershaw uses the steel liner on the G10 side.

fastforward to 4:00 of this video. enough said about their warranty. this is what was the tie breaker between be ordering a benchmade skirmish OR a zt 300. if this isn't customer service i don't know what is.

You can't order a BM Skirmish they no longer make them. That means you would have to go second hand market which you don't seem to do.

As for warranty I wouldn't put too much weight on one company over another. BM, Kershaw, Spyderco, and some of the other larger US based companies have a very good warranty department. And with the knives you are looking to buy I'd say there are some very slim odds you will have to worry about it anyway.

didn't know that.. says it was avaliable at knife works no biggy i went with the 300.

bm, kershaw and spyderco all do have a good warrenty but i don't think they will replace them with extreme use like zt/strider would.

They are still out there on some shelves but they don't compare to a ZT300.

And there are also some very crappy ones like SOG, and myself and my Sons have broken and basically destroyed a few knives.

So that is why I care about the warranty

I've always wondered about warranties that restrict coverage to the original purchaser. What happens if the original purchaser bought a knife with the intention of gifting it to another? Would a manufacturer seriously deny warranty work in that scenario?

vjb. knife,
i just got th 0350 in today and love it. some people say the handle is too small this and that but i think it's overall a great knife. now i want to order a larger knife ( yes i got knife fevor now). 350 is making me lean toward teh 300

i'm stuck inbetween the 0300 (i like it in all black), 200 and the mudd.

in the picks the 300's blade looks like a great width but i have been told the pics are deciving.. how is the width of the blade? anything u dont like about it?.. i'm goign to order my second knife tomorrow so trying to make a last min decision now. right now after seening those pics i'm leaning toward the 300.(i dont plan on getting anymore knives after this so i want a really good one)

as for how tough the knife is look at these videos of it. some1 put them to the test since u havn't yet. all 3 performed very well

rope test
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hsRbuYiGQQ

wood/ brick test
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnGbQbsW_d0&feature=related

stabing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x69yZKIz0-s&feature=related

bolt test (the 300 would of cut the larger bolt it was more then 1/2 through it. it kept hitting it wrong though)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uuyb_vXut1M&feature=related

and hell build a brick walkway with it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnGbQbsW_d0&feature=related

beat them with a large wood object

Wait a minute, those tests aren't scientific. I think the post needs to be
removed. ;)

Just joshin, I've always wondered what the folders can take. Thanks!

yea sorry i know there totally unreliable tests ;) next time we need to write out a lab report , do it in a lab and wear a white coat. with such tests as the
1)water bottle test. shoot it with very corrsive tap water. a normal knife would rust in min
2) cut week old newspaper,,,because we all know that is how to really test out the cutting power. a normal knife would go dull in 2 passes
3) and chopping and apple in half.. u know one of the hardest fruits to test out it's toughness.

i think the 300 would of done much better if he knew how to hit the back of it correctly. the larger bolt it was almost through b4 he started to hit it wrong. sometimes 300's dont come razor sharp from the factory for some reason (very sharp but not razor). if he would of gave it a few passes to razor it up i know it would of done way better (2nd place behind the 100 isn't good enough)

count down 3 days until my 300 arrives! then i'm going to use just that knife to build me a house.
