heavy use folder wanted

I'm looking for an extreme heavy use folder with at least 4-inch heavy carbon blade. The closest I've been able to come is CS Recon #1. Would like a conventional clip blade, the heavier the better - even to 1/4" Want it to replace fixed blade, for pocket carry. Do I have to go to a custom? Thanks for your help.

"Extreme heavy use"? Well, it seems you ought to check out the Extrema Ratio folders as it satisfies those requirements you are looking for except for the blade material (they're stainless).

On the custom-end of the spectrum; check out John Greco's offerings or Severtech (Note: the Severtech's are automatics).

I currently have an older but still excellent plus conditioned Al Mar folding SERE attack lockback. It has a 4 1/2" blade and micarta handle. You will have to look hard for one, but ebay has had alot of Al Mars for sale.
This knife is strickly for emergency like shtf type or if I know I am going into harms way of some sort.

The Queen or Schatt & Morgan Mountain Man; good knife. Another possibility is one of the SOG Tomcat folders. Big heavy folder.

extreme heavy use folder

Please define. If your idea of the meaning of that phrase is anywhere close to mine, you aren't in folder country any more.

If you really want to try to make a folder replace a fixed blade... *scratches head* The Ka-bar MULE has had some very good results in abusive tests. And won't break the bank.

I just want to say that all the listed knives are at what IMHO is the upper limit of what a folder should be. The Mannix, the BM, and the Al Marr are really big heavy-duty knives that will do all you should ever ask a folder to do, and probably do even more than that.

The problem comes when you ask a folder to act as a fixed blade. if you are working to the point where you are risking breaking a mannix, millie, or the like, you are REALLY close to getting your self in a world of trouble. When stuff breaks at that level of abuse, it does not creak, vibrate or otherwise warn you of impending failure. They break in a heartbeat, with you really hard to get them to break, and you tend to get carried by inertia in the collection of sharp bits that are left.

Ever had a wrench slip off a nut while working on the car? WHen you have your full body weight behind it? Remember slamming your hand hard into the sharp pieces of stuff all around? Do that not, but replace that alternator pulley with a broken jagged piece of tool steel blade. Now, doesn;t that seem like a good reason the fixed blade should have been your first choice.

Guys, read what he already wrote. :D

I'm not trying to replace a fixed blade, which I always have. I'm just looking for a very strong folder for pocket carry which will hold-up under heavy field use - an extra knife.

You can get stainless blades now that come close to high carbon performance. I really can't think of any seriously heavy duty high carbon folder except John Greco's.

The true heavy-duty folders at that size or slightly shorter would be several models from Extrema Ratio, Trident knives, TOPS, the Strider SMF, Chris Reeve Sebenza, Spyderco Manix, Benchmade Skirmish, and the Ontario Hossom Retribution II. Emerson has an extensive line-up of strong folders, also, but his are oriented towards self-defense.

Many of these are expensive but if that's not a problem, customs from Darrel Ralph or Bob Dozier are also massively strong.

Good questions about what is meant by "heavy use."

Seems like a folder as strong against prying, for example, as a fixed-blade w/ comparable blade would have to be significantly heavier.
