Hello & Survive! Knife mods

The tumbler should work perfectly. Any ceramic triangle media for it?

No.... Never even herd of that...
But now that I have, I'll keep an eye out.
Looking at what I currently have (lyman tuffnut, red) I'm pretty sure that's not going to work

I would think, that's what I've seen for most other tumblers. The ones advertised at HF have polyethylene drums as well.

Yeah... I took a look at the reviews and I think this will be a nice addition to my set up ... Allowing me to do some metal finishing/corrosion. Hopefully it will knock the paint off those fasteners ... Thanks

Post some in-progress pics please, I've been considering adding a vibratory tumbler to my collection for this sort of work. The blast cabinet is sometimes too harsh for the little stuff.

Finally found these pics. Pimped some new handle scales for the GSO 10. Simple tan and brown G10 laminated together but with a twist. I mixed some industrial grade glow powder into the epoxy before laminating the two pieces of G10 together. Gives a slight glow at night when charged but not real bright as to become over bearing. Anyway, here's some pics.

Hale storm ...

Boy, I like those a lot !!
I was just lookin at one of my 4.1s today, thinking about liners ... I like the detail it added to your 10

Yep. I have an old school 4.1 in M390 that has orange G10 scales. It's begging me to pimp something wild on it. Double laminated two color with a white liner maybe?

Of course, I'd have to build another sheath unless I went with orange or black again. :D

Amen brother! I make a few extra bucks here and there [and then spend it on knives, guns, huntin', fishin' etc.] but the shop in the garage doesn't have benefits or health insurance. LOL

But it could include a 401k... Depends on how you look at it [emoji41]

I've told my son he's heir to an empire since he was a baby .... He just has to figure out what that empire is [emoji41][emoji41]

What would happen if I used the file on my Leatherman Sidekick to try to take off the sharp corners on my GSO jimping?

I have very little tools or skills for any serious modding, but my thumbs are still not getting along with the sharp corners.....

Pretty sure that the file on the sidekick is just 420HC at < 58 Rc... it's really short and rather soft, so it would take you a long time to maybe slightly dull the edge of that spine while significantly dulling the teeth of the file :p Nah, skip it. Get a coarse hone - SiC, diamond, etc. - and use that. In fact, if you want to wait, I'll do it to my new-spec 5.1 using a cheap hone and will report back tomorrow.

Oh, and congrats, by the way! I've been out of town / internet access and missed out on the fun of you getting your 4.7 duo

Yes! Do it and let me know!

A diamond stone is something I have, I just don't want to screw up irreversibly...

Thank you! Last week was a good week for me :D

Copying to here from the other thread - I used a cheap stone but a diamond hone would work as well, just use a sufficiently coarse grit to start and then polish until satisfied.

Alright, I didn't have time last night so i did the job this morning just now, here are some quick cell-phone pics:

My GSO-5.1 and a couple of hardware-store hones:

Here is the smaller one - coarse/fine 1"x3" SiC or AlOx hone that cost ~$1 at the local hardware store

This is what the untouched side of the jimping looks like

And after rubbing the coarse-side of that little stone back and forth and rounding over the other side, <60 seconds later

One could use this same stone or another to round the edges between the jimping if desired (a round ceramic rod would work perfect for that), but this gives you an idea of what can be done quickly/easily/cheaply to improve your comfort. Just rub it to the desired grit/polish and go :)

I never thought I'd be contributing to a modding thread, not in a million years. I always just kind of trusted the product as it came from the company........ even an extended stay in the Becker forum didn't get me into modding and those guys are modding wizards, that's kind of their thing.

Now, clearly mine is more of a hack job than Chiral's and it is a work in progress...
I used the diamond plates and ceramic rods from my Worksharp Field Sharpener and rounded the jimping and part of the spine beyond the jimping (the spot where my off hand thumb would press when making cuts for try sticks).

Speaking of a work in progress... I would appreciate any guidance as to how to polish and smooth more (no power tools available...) so that I'm not mailing out hand written invitations for corrosion in all the abrasions I've made.

Chiral, thank you for giving me the courage to try this simple mod! Despite the butt ugliness, it feels SO GOOD to have those sharp angles knocked off. I'll have a chance later tonight to really give it a test, but right now it is more rounded than even my old spec 5 and I really like it.

If you want to polish up the edges that you rounded try using a strop. It might take some more of the coating off, but it will smooth out the texture.
I've never used a work sharp ceramic rod, but if you made gentle finishing passes the surface really shouldn't be that rough.
