Hello & Survive! Knife mods

I mentioned electrical tape or duct tape earlier, but I think the thing to do would be mask the edge with tape and use spray-on Plasti-dip to guard the edge during stonewashing.
Whoops, I missed your comment. Great minds thinking alike?

I'm very interested to see how this turns out... I'm partial to the tumbled finish as I think it's better on the "user" side of things, though I personally like the looks of the new finish better ... I know the new spec spine is sharp enough to throw sparks.. I'm curious how the tumbling will affect it ??
I'm pretty sure the tumbling is what upset the "ultimate bushcrafter commandos" because it rounded the spine.

Just use fingernail polish on the edge and tumble away. Then clean it off with acetone and resharpen. That's how I always do my stonewashing

Probably ... Which is to bad, cuz I really think it's a superior finish..

I'm thinking along these lines for under the scales as I've already got a bit of surface corrosion goin on. I was thinking something like this or maybe a lite coat of silicon grease

"Ultimate bushcrafter commandos" bahaha:rolleyes:, good one:thumbup:. Yeah, I really dont get these guys lol. Almost all ferro rods come with a steel striker so, why do you need the back side of your $200 knife to do it? Also, Guy offers a ferro notch if you want it. Plus, if you were in dire need and lost your steel some how(plus every other metal thing on your person), you can always use the edge of your knife. A quarter inch section of blade possibly loosing some of its hardness(damaged HT) is going to be the least of your worries at that point. It's a pretty silly thing to complain about if you ask me.

I guess Guy kinda missed it then... Seems with the "new spec" he's giving a nod to the guys who want a sharp spine...[emoji848]

I think whoever wants what they can't have is more vocal. Even though I prefer a spine that is geared towards thumb luxury vs multipurposedness, I totally get why Guy made the change. Over the last few years many knives were partially rated on their ability to throw a spark and scrape bark with the spine. Now that GSO's can do those things we may hear more from the other side who prefer rounded corners.

Very good my friend. You've hit the nail square on the head.

ETA: BTW, I'm with you, and would prefer no jimping and rounder edges. One of the reasons I love my old 3.5 so much.

Yep, even within our tight group we will never all agree on jimping vs jimpless and sharp spines vs round spines. Let alone the rest of the knife world. :D

Jimpless would be amazing but I can't complain about the new jimping. Survive did a great job on making it functional and not intrusive. I have beat up construction hands so my opinion may be biased.

Yea i highly prefer the jimpless 4.1 over the regular.

+1 and I'm only in my early 30'so

I regret getting rid of my 3.5 and I have been preferring jimpless and a smoother spine as of late. I brought up the stone washed idea because of the spine. I don't want to get poked with a pitch fork here, but I thought the jumping on my old spec was still a bit too aggressive for me. Still the best jimping my hands have been on but I figure I've just grown out of my need or want for it.

Well... looks like I'm in the minority, I like a sharp spine (obviously) aannnndd jimping. I think old spec jimimping is the best I've found on a knife, and is pretty important since mine get the most use under a heavy gloved hand, in the middle of the winter. I guess I'm glad Guy doesn't play favorites... taking user feedback into consideration

Where's the "ultimate bushcrafter commando" sign up sheet ?? [emoji41]

Wow! If you like jimping AND a sharp spine I think that bumps you up to Elite Bushcraft Operator ;)

We'll call it the EBO club... Not completely removed from UFO, but to be official, you have prove your Tactical Elite Skill Mentality or TESM for short... [emoji57]

Just wondering....As the post office lost the tumbled fasteners intended for anther forum member (their still on the lookout I guess[emoji19]) has anyone tried tumbling or stripping the black oxide ones ?? Being curious myself, and having just received blk fasteners from Survive! I put a set onto a container with EZstrip but to no avail... Any thoughts ??

You'll probably need to mechanically remove the black oxide coating. I suggest media blasting or a wire wheel. Just watch out, the wire wheel has a propensity to grab small fasteners and send them across the room at speeds approaching that of sound.

That's kinda what I'm thinking too..
tool wise I have a tumbler (reloading) but I've never used rocks and was concerned about what that would do to the fastener, not being familiar with that particular process (kind of stone, rounded, large, small, etc.) I don't currently have a blaster of any kind, I can get a wire wheel pretty easily but like you, I know that can get a bit fussy, even dangerous ... Lol !

The tumbler should work perfectly. Any ceramic triangle media for it? Also, just tape external threads and shouldn't be an issue. Or put the fastener together tightly and let the tumbler do its thing. Should be next to no material removal and it'll just break the edges slightly, but I think mine are pretty well rounded to begin with.
