Or you can just get one of these. :D

Myakka: Please stop posting, I'm sick of it. Every time you do, I feel the need to buy more gear!!! After your last thread on your bush gear, it made me go back over my gear list (again) to see if I could get away without a backpack. I have decided that, alas, I can't get by in Kentucky without a solid sleeping bag, which necessitates the pack. Bleh. Your bush knives rock by the way.

Back to the thread topic, this Tora blade has served me really well.

It costs about $65 or so, but it's had some rebeveling. I'd really like to pick up one of the nicer scandi models at Ragnars, though.

Outstanding pic Myakka. How do those compare?? I'm really anxious to try out the Skookum one it looks like it's got a little bit more belly than the rest?

Sorry to hijack, well okay I'm not:D , but I keep hearing that Deadwood might be coming back. It's all internet rumor though.:(

Oh and I actually like Rome. Definately not as good as Deadwood but better than a lot of things out there.

OK guys, you all know I have a pile of 4" knives...I am however missing from my collection a real bushcraft knife../
Hmmm. "pile."

Please answer the following questions:

1. Of this pile of kinves, is there at least one that: a) cuts wood well - like shaving a "fuzz stick"; b) has a point that readily allows drilling holes? If the answer is yes, you have a real bushcraft knife.

2. If the answer is, no," you defy the rule that even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then. :D

Bretheren (and Sisteren), isn't it amazing that all those people existed in the woods for centuries without the benefit of a "bushcraft knife" -- which MUST have a "Scandi" grind (relatively rare among knives made in Scandinavia - but what do they know?)

Not as nice as Myakka's stuff, but here are some of my Mora blades, I have a few more including the Frost 780 Triflex...my favorite. I'm done buying Moras, I think I have enough to choose from:D

I know it's not an bushcraft knife considering the form/size and general looks, but I use my Ontario TAK-1 as main bushcraft knife. And it does a perfect job.

I also use a more traditional knife: the EKA Nordic W11

This EKA is a fantastic knife, feels great in the hand and is easy to sharpen. And don't forget, this blade is thick!! So splitting logs is not problem at all!

Got a dumb question do the mora's with the plastic handles have a full tang as well? I think I've read somewhere that the plastic models do not and the traditional red wood handled ones do.

Given that the plastic handle is molded around the "stick" tang, it's not full-length.

With all the red wood handled ones I have seen, you can see the end of the tang so it's within a mm or two of being full-length. I'm not sure that means a great deal since the tangs on mine have been left soft. Hit on them and they bend. Hit enough and the handle breaks.

Great cutters.

I don't think it gets much better unless you are wanting something larger. I have been carrying this one for about 1 1/2 years daily. It is the Brusletto Profileringskniv.

I've been eying those, I like the unpolished one. MAN this is an expensive website.

I agree pinetree. I see one knife I want then I jump on the bandwagon loving another...No joke I really think I'm worse off now then before I joined!!! Now I like the EKA Nordic W11 as posted by cz75b! And before that the new bushcraft skookum bush knife a poster had on a few days ago. I now like so many different knife maker styles I just don't know which to get first. Then I want to buy a digital camera so I can post and so on and so on! But in all seriousness would you guys agree that a nessie is a bushcraft knife as well? I am pretty commit to getting one of those first!

Most nessies lack the drilling point called for in an "official" "Bushcraft" knife. They are optimized for skinning and general slicing.

I like Bushcraft knives, but for the stuff I usually do in the woods the Nessmuk is really a better camping knife. Usually thinner bladed. Great for stirring stuff too!

Thanks for all the Happy B-day wishes guys. And I get it, I can use any of my knives to go into the woods, in fact, I believe I have worked hard at narrowing out all the crap from collection. I trust my knives, all of them. BUT...I collect knives as well as love the outdoors. I love collecting knives, and I love useful knives best of all. Fighters and Rambo type knives don't really do it for me anymore...so, a Mears type knife is on my list. I think they are nice looking knives that could work hard...can't wait to get one.:D

The EKA Nordic W11 is kind of similiar to SpookyPistolero's beauty!

DD,

That's true. I think spooky's one is made by HI? Doesn't matter much, both knives are not very expensive, so that's a good thing for bushcraft I think.

The reasonn I use the TAK-1 as main bushcraft knife is because of the fact, the EKA W11 is just too beautifull for the same workout I give my TAK-1. I have used the W11 many times, and it performs excellent!
Add a SAK Camper, Huntsman or Ranger and you're ready to go....:D
