Help me find my “for life” $300-500 “overbuilt” folder

If had to spend $300-500 on "overbuilt" folders, I think it'd be fun to try the Wildsteer WX and a Spyderco Shaman. :)

I do like the OP's choices too though.

Also, if anyone felt like putting up a comparison pic of a 4max next to a Military or PM2, that would be cool and appreciated. Would like to get a better idea of how big it is, thx.

;) Imagine a couple of ordinary guys posing next to the Hulk !

That's what I'd do add a Bahco Laplander for 20$ and possibly a small hatchet.
Might go cheap and go with the CS recon 1 in a good steel after a discussion with the owner of the place I buy most of my knives from. He carries one for hard use and they sell Hinderer, CRK and Medford.

Definately adding this crazy looking ESEE 6 that will ensure I don’t lose it in the dark. keeps me under budget too.

Hey all,

I really want to buy a rock solid knife that will theoretically last me for decades of fairly hard use (mainly in the woods and camping).

I have lots of Spyderco’s, A ZT, a couple of Benchmades and an Italian Fox, so really looking for something “different” and more heavy duty. I will likely be buying my first Emerson soon as well.

I have looked at Medfords, but don’t want to spend $800 on a knife and not fond of the crazy rules around their warranty.

So what should I be looking at? Hinderer? Strider? What others?

Any ideas would be great.

Thanks!

i think what youre looking for is called a fixed blade.

I dont own one but I just keep thinking sebenza. From what I understand if you break it he will fix it. And I dont think you will find a much stronger knife, aside from the lock. They have very smart construction to them, so they dont have to be "over-built" to make up for it.

EDIT-I also wanted to add the spyderco manix 2 to the list. I wouldnt say it is overbuilt, but I have pretty much been trying to damage mine the last couple months and it is still perfect. You have a larger budget so get a sprint run with nicer steel and handles and I think It would last you forever.

So what did you end up getting ?

Haha, I ordered a Baby Jess Horn yesterday. :D

I was just reading this thread for fun the other day and wasn't familiar with the 4Max, so I asked for a comparison pic. It definitely looks like an impressive tank of a knife, but I'm happy with the Millie as my large folder (I have two of the lefty variant already, true of the PM2 as well).

The Wildsteer and Shaman suggestions were just ideas of what I might buy if I wanted an overbuilt folder, but in reality I just grab a fixed blade.

Nice. It's always great adding a new blade to the collection.

Another vote for the 4-max. I just got an Italian one. $279.99 on Midway currently. Fit and finish is near flawless. By far the most solid folder I've ever owned or held.

I haven't had much personal experience with 300-500$ knives, but I have an abundance of knowledge using sub 100$ knives and a minute bit using 100-200$ knives. I also have spent TOO MANY hours comparing varying folders in your price range . Most knives over 300$ aren't better because they last longer, they are crafted with more precision and lend a sense of pride to owning a practical piece of art. I don't mean to criticize because I have recently purchased a knife that has a great reputation for durability and also paid much more for essentially beautiful upgrades to that knife. As far as locking mechanisms go the tri ad looks stronger than the benchmade axis lock, but the axis is easier to use one handed than the tri ad. Not to mention the axis lock can be further strengthened my using the additional thumb lock to essentially turn it into a temporary fixed blade.

Thread update:
1. The OP has found his knife, 2 each Cold Steel Recon 1s.
2. The OP has already cut himself with one of them, permanently sealing his bond with the knife.
3. A Spyderco Baby Jess Horn is now considered an Overbuilt Folder.

Actually, the original purchase was the Recon 1 and an ESEE 6. I’ve added 4 or 5 other knives to the arsenal since though. :D

When I have some extra cash, I may revisit a CRK though.
