I am going to be making a new camp knife from 1/8" O1 steel next week. Which design below should I go with (the handle is the only thing that changes). Also, any other changes I should make?

I like # 2 the best. The only change I'd make would be to ad an additional sway towards the rear of the handle. Curves like that help you to know where the knife is in your hand without having to look.

hollowdweller,
What do you mean in line of the handle? By stick out to far, do you mean it's too long?

I'd say 2 or 3. I agree with Fiddleback a nice curve in the handle is a good thing.

Most of the knife styles I prefer the handle has an good curve to it. For me no straight handled knife could ever be as comfortable.

Their all fairly close. I would say try to make a cardboard mockup of each and see which one feels best to you. Looks like a cool project by the way.

#3 would probably more practical, I thick the other two would put the hand into a more akward angle for carving?

i vote #2, but i also agree on modding it a little.

i think you should bring the spine a little more inline, so that it is straighter. keep the bottom as it is.

funny, these look very similar to several knives i have on the bench right now...i guess great minds think alike...

I'm thinking 3 as well. I'll straiten out the handle a bit, and post a 3D picture later. I'll keep you posted on the progress. I'll cut the outline shape on a CNC, with a 10 inch knife, that leaves me about 6 inches of left over O1... Guess I'll be working on little companion.

What should I handle these with?

#2 but INVERT the curve back of your finger choilly thing.

Hard to explain. Sorta like this: (and for reasons fiddleback stated)

That looks pretty good! The handle drop wouldn't have hurt you though. It actually winds up feeling pretty good in the hand. Still, thats pretty. Be sure to draw the drill holes onto your drawing, so that when you print it 1:1 you can make a drilling template!

Here is what I do:

Print it out 1:1 (maybe even a couple of times). Use a spray adhesive to stick the template directly to the steel. Drill through the paper and steel. Grind down to the lines for the outline. Measure distance from holes to edge of tang with a caliper, and ajust grind so that holes are centered. Check curves to make sure they're still feminine and flowing. Ajust if necessary.

Nowadays, I make a more permanent template out of plexiglass or whatever I have around so I don't have to continually print new templates. I drill right through the template. Neat and clean and repeatable.
