Thank you so much for all the input!

I wanted to restrict it to just one for novelty's sake, because I normally carry at least 2.

I went with the Kershaw Injection 3.5.

I went with it because I wanted something inexpensive, with a good general use blade, that had one hand opening. I would have also brought a Swiss Army Knife, as many suggested, but I thought I was going to get one when I got here.

It came in handy pretty much right away. We had to cross a little river and had to do a little plastic surgery after haha. Then the next day I went spear fishing and took it. It worked well, dispatched a fish although I didn't do super well with the spear gun.

However, it did rust pretty badly during the spear fishing. Nothing that will affect use, but bead blasted 8cr13mov is definitely not the most corrosion resistant of stainless steels. I have been wanting a Spyderco Carribean and I think I might take this as a sign to get one soon ish.

I ended up losing it later that day (yesterday). I think it fell onto the ground when I got out of the car. But it's close by so I might be able to go find it.

I'm knifeless!!!

Good choice. Sucks you lost it. Hope it turns up. At least you aren't out much. I think mine was $15.

And yes, bead blast 8cr (or aus8) will attract rust. For my go to water, exercise, vacation knife I take a Pacific salt.

Maybe look at the Lansky LKN333 Mikkel Willumsen World Legal Folding Knife if you travel a lot. It’s specially designed for this purpose.

They also market it as just the Lansky World Legal.

It costs less than $20 so it’s probably not a high quality piece but it’s probably worth a few minutes of research.

Another alternative would be buying a cheap switchblade once you get to Costa Rica. There are tons of them for sale down there. Then leave it behind when you come home

Lansky World Legal Description

Balancing form with function, the World Legal was born from one idea: make a great knife that can be carried anywhere in the world. Simple but efficient, it combines modern aesthetics with traditional slip-joint technology.”

I went back to try to look for the Injection 3.5 but couldn't find it. Today is the first day in 2019 I'm carrying a pocket knife!
