Help me spend $1250

Wow ptdoc, lots of stuff to reply to.

1. About the issue of time vs money. You are absolutely 100% correct. A lawyer that can bill $200/hr should not be making a grinder that takes 8 hrs to build when he only saves $300 doing it himself. In fact, even someone that makes $15 an hour would have to do the math if they don't like building stuff or would rather make knives than build grinders. I happen to be on the more time than money end. I have five kids and am a paramedic. Not a lot of fat left there for toys or dad's playtime. I don't really even have that much time. In essence, it just takes me longer to do something than most people. It will take me two months rather than two weekends to put the GIB or EERF grinder together. However, it would take a year or two to save up the extra to buy a KMG completely built.

2. That horizontal KMG mod looks fairly straight forward. You'd need to run your motor below the grinder (like a table saw) on a rigid mount, then just make a pivot point on the side of the KMG baseplate with a piano hinge. Weld or screw a couple "feet/legs" to the side of the uprights or the tool arm socket for the grinder to sit on when it's in horizontal mode. Not terribly difficult to figure out how it was done, but I don't have the CAD drawing skills to make plans.

Let us know how it goes. Having the stuff cut for you will be really nice. One thing that always seems to drive up cost are screws, nuts, bolts, levers, handles. Crazy how fast they add up if you are getting quality pieces.

Keep us posted.

Just a small update. My coworker's husband came through! I'm getting all the bits and pieces for the EERF grinder with flat platen attachment for FREE!!! He has them all cut out, and I should have them early next week. I'm a very happy man.

Also, is 1.5 hp "enough" on a EERF/GIB?

Nice haul on the fixtures, but used tubes can output half as much light as new tubes

Maybe new tubes are worth getting ?

Now that is cash in your pocket. That was very nice of him.

hp ratings are interpreted loosely by some manufacturers. I read on this forum that a few folks had a 1.5 and thought it was lacking. When I price shopped on eBay, I didn't consistently see price differences between 1.5, 2 and 3 hp. This was on new and nos. sometimes the lower hp motors were costlier.
