Don't want to speak for SK. But for me the point is to avoid using cheap materials like plastic on a special limited-run knife.

If you were limited using the plastic border would the color be limited to black only? It must be relatively easy to change the color of the plastic border to something that matches or accents the colors of the scales.

I’m think since these are just computer renderings, that the natural micarta may be lighter on the actual product. I would go for natural micarta or green linen micarta if we got to see a rendering of that.
You are right about the rendering. The natural is much brighter, and also depends on the type of finish we go with in the end. I plan to dive full force into this with Buck next week.

As for the Giveaway, we'll be compiling names and drawing a name soon. I'd rather get the final version solid and then announce!

Man im late to this. Oh well, will most likely be ordering one or two since a Vantage is my EDC

You know what? All the renderings look good, even the black (though it wouldn't be my first choice). First choice would be natural micarta with either blade finish, I think.

I'm certain all three of these colors will sell. I for one would have to have one of each. I would consider making all three colors.

Hi there! Thanks for your contest. I'd opt for m390 satin finish and dark cloured micarta, like dark yellow-brown with brighter yellow spacers maybe? To create a nice contrast.

FINALLY!!!
I've heard back from Buck on pricing and moving forward with the project. Good news is that it is finally in the queue. Bad news is that they are doing a testing period on the M390, so I'm trying to get a timeline on that. Now that the knife is set, we can hold our drawing and announce a winner. Too bad they'll have to wait a few months for the knife, but hey, we waited ages on the Titan and it was worth it!

Final Knife:
Natural Micarta
Stone Washed M390 Blade

Sweet. Good job

Good news. And I'm not surprised by the delay. Has Buck ever made anything from M390 before?

Good on them. I wouldn’t want one that was rushed out without thorough vetting. Hopefully they will give that same level of attention to the rest of the knife.

That makes sense, the testing period. One of the things that has always set Buck apart was their ability to treat their metals well. Even from the very beginning of Buck knives their heat treating process produced better quality knives, and they have maintained that tradition. Even when they switched to 420HC from 440C for their main steel they made sure that they knew how to get the most out of 420HC. And they really get excellent performance out of S30V, and I would rather have well done S30V than okay S35VN. I would expect more of the same from Buck on their M390. I am sure that whenever they finish their testing, whatever steel you end up using, it will be a high quality version of that steel.

So waiting is lame, but worth it for a good product.

Hurry up and wait! That's the way it works. It will be worth the wait I'm sure!

I wouldn't mind knowing how they perform the steel tests and how it performs (without divulging trade secrets of course).

Thanks for the update.

I know it's early to ask, but any kind of updates on this knife yet? I'm very anxiously awaiting this, I love the Vantage platform but am not too enthralled by the steel options.

Glad it's coming to fruition. If you make another run with the burgundy micarta scales I'll be in for a couple.
