Help with folder sizes

I love designing and making folders that are 4 1/4" closed to 5 1/2" or even longer. Goldie insists that the market wants knives that are 3 1/4 to 3 5/8 closed.

Help me out and tell me what sizes you really like.

Big, 4 1/4 up?

Med 3 5/8" to 4"?

Smaller 22 3/4" to 3 1/2?

Pen knives, smaller yet?

thanks for your help

I like smaller sizes. From the Peanut which is 2-7/8" up to about 3-5/8". I can do 3-3/4" if it is single bladed and thin, but I really notice the size and weight of a pocketknife much more than a tactical blade with a clip (which I no longer carry). That's because the pocketknife sits in the bottom of the pocket.

My favorite size is 3-1/8" to 3-3/8" with nice, pocket-friendly rounded edges. A good Jack or other 2-bladed design suits me fine! Smaller knives in this range also tend to have thinner blades, which I like, because they are slicing demons and don't bind in corrugated cardboard, clam-shell packaging or apples. Thicker blades do which is a main reason I stopped carrying tactical-style knives--they just don't cut well for most of the things I need a knife for.

AG,

For EDC carry. I really like 3 1/4 to 3 5/8. 3 3/4 are generally to heavy and clunky to carry everywhere.

God Bless

A.G., for front pocket carry, I always thought anything over 4-inches was a little much. That was until I picked up this G. Bradley trapper. It is 4 1/4" closed, but nice and thin and it is a treat to carry around.

Now, for back pocket carry, bring on the large ones!

Good thread, anxious to follow this one.

AG...

I carry three knives normally, a small slip joint in a pocket...peanut or barlow sized, a larger slip joint in a belt bouch...this can be up to hunter size or over 5 inches, and what many would call a "tactical" pocket clip knife like a Spyderco.

The small pocket slippie is for social settings, when around non-knife folks I use a small knife to keep from upsetting folks...tho it has never happened to me i still try to do this. Some cutting jobs can be dome easier with a larger knife and that is where the pouch knife comes in, and the pocket clip knife that locks and can be opened one handed is a piece of emergency equipment. It is what I would reach for if a seatbelt needed cutting in a hurry or similar circumstances.

Please design all different sizes...we all don't ride the same saddle...

Hi AG,

I like a 3 inch blade, no longer. It's the legal limit in many places.

I've been drooling over your new Acies folder but the blade length would put me at risk here in IL.

Please oh please tell me you are planning on making a smaller version with a blade right at or under 3".

My carry knife has been the Chris reeves small Micarta sebenza.

3 1/4 is a nice all around pocket knife too me. Just big enough to get the job done, small enough to forget about till you need it.

With increased security and stricker laws in a lot of cities, the usefullness of a large knife is shrinking fast. Much bigger than a sak and it starts getting too much attention.

Somehow our grandfathers got by with small pocket knives.

I like 3 1/2 - 3 5/8 for a daily user. Many states specify blade length for concealed carry , NV is 3" blade max.

I think your Texas Ranger in 3 5/8 or 3 1/2 would be about purfect.

I love that knife , but just too big for pocket carry.

3 5/8" to 4" is my perfect carrying size. Blade no larger than 3".

A.G.

The right 4" + knife can be carried, but it would have to be slim and just too damn good looking to leave in the drawer.
I pretty much only carry from 2.75" up to 3.5" and occasionally 3.75".

The Case mini-Copperlock is just about perfect imo for an edc knife. It's right at 3 5/8" long closed and the blade is just shy of 2 3/4". That's plenty of blade for any normal edc task, but what makes the knife a joy to carry is the overall slimness.

In general I like traditional folders around 3 1/2" closed. I love the three spring designs of the Buck Stockmans, but the 303 is 3 1/4" and the 301 is 4" . I'd love to find a three spring stockman in between those two, non-ss blade of course. :)

I like pocket knives in the 4 inch range, it's just about perfect for me. The Case trapper is a good example, so are the GEC toothpick, and the GEC cuban big jack/cuban stockman. If you haven't handled them, I think you'd like 'em, A.G.

For a belt-sheath knife, I prefer a larger knife; like a Buck 110 size.

Same for a pocket-clip general purpose knife; a 3.25" blade minimum.

Thanks for asking. :)

For the pocket 4". For the belt 4.5". The largest folder that I have is 5" (an old Kershaw outlaw bill). That is about the ultimate limit.

Interesting thread A.G.

I prefer the small-to-medium size (about 3 1/8" tp 3 3/4") for EDC. That way it doesn't take up my whole pocket and it's big enough to handle just about everything I need. I don't see the need for anything much larger unless it's for a specific purpose.

I prefer 3 1/2" to 3 5/8". However, I do have a couple 4 - 4 1/4" single blade patterns that I use as well. That is the upper limit of a comfortable size for me.
