Here we go again

I don't know the manufacture dates. Never looked them up. Like I said before. Stored in a cabinet wrapped in paper. Pulled three out today and one had a broken spring.

Babalu did you check? I heard one of mine go. It's a sound you don't want to hear. I'm up to 5 Queens and a Mike Alsdorf without back springs.

Yikes, it sounds rampant, and it could happen anytime? I wonder what the mechanics is for a steel that is not touched or going through extreme environmental changes can randomly break. I've seen this happen in tempered glass but even that is NOT a common occurrence.

I have a lot of knives, so no I haven't had a moment to check em all. Hopefully the RRs not the GECs lol.

Until reading this thread I had no idea that backsprings could randomly pop outside of active use, just sitting in storage. Is this a known issue with Queen, meaning does it seem to happen with them more than other slipjoint makers? I've purchased quite a number of Queen or Queen-made knives recently and now I'm worried....

Makes me wonder if something is funky with the storage climate. I wouldn’t think 5 springs randomly popping is normal. Unless you have literally thousands of knives.

Stored in zip locks in a closet. New England. I do have a few knives.😲

This really sounds like the temper was done incorrectly. I am very curious to know the time period in which these were made. If I were a betting man, I would wager that most of these were made after 2005. All of my queens (which includes S&M and Queen made Winchesters) were made prior to 2007 and so far I have no broken springs.

Mine was a edc. So in my pocket, or in a climate controlled safe when not carried.

I've never had another spring break. 420HC, CPM154, other D2, 1095....

I was opening mine when it snapped. It was a decent pull on that spring. And a blade I used frequently. A little coping blade.

The spring had a darker area then the lighter fresh break, so it had been cracked for some time... weirdly enough the pull never felt softer at all.

Two more for today. Another Queen DB Barlow. This is the third one. I'm starting to believe I live in a backspring vortex.

I started collecting DB Barlows. Three have had this problem. Not to mention other #69 frames.
