Box Elder is in the Maple family, but it is noticeably softer than what you normally think of as "hard" maple (about half the Janka hardness). I don't know if it is stabilized - I would guess so - which would make it more resistant to damage.
Box Elder grows around here, and it grows fast and does not live as long as sugar maple, for example.
The Box Elder burl they use is indeed stabilized.
