Starting tonight on Discovery channel (182 for dish network folks) Cody Lundin & Dave Canterbury which some met at Blade show.Looks to be a Great show.I have my DVR set LOL
Can two survivor men share a shelter without driving each other crazy?
Thats the question asked in Discoverys new series Dual Survival, which strands two wilderness experts in various unhospitable locations and watches them work together or not using widely different approaches.
Although its more contrived and more open about its corner cutting than the average survivalist show, the two guys odd-couple chemistry works, as does the usual cool factor of seeing woodsmen apply their skills.
In the premiere, airing tonight at 10E/P, the two experts, a military-trained wilderness-survival teacher named Dave Canterbury and an indigenous-survival expert named Cory Lundin, are set adrift in a raft near a deserted island off Nova Scotia. Besides the raft, all they have is a knife, a plastic tarp, a Mylar blanket and a signal flare.
The two guys sum up their philosophies, which couldnt be more different. Dave says, The elements are your enemy. Cody says, Adapt to the elements or die.
Visually, theyre also easy to tell apart. Dave has close-cropped hair and a mustache and wears camouflage. Cody has two long braids alongside his face, wears shorts and goes barefoot, even though the daytime temperature on the island is 32 degrees.
This is the first time the two have worked with another person, and their styles dont meld. Dave repeatedly describes Codys techniques as bush hippie, which sounds a lot like another compound word.
As they find shelter under a fallen tree and use a rather uninteresting method to make fire, viewers learn some tricks they may not have known before. Cody explains how a plastic tarp in front of a fire can let in heat and then trap it like a greenhouse. For all his touchy-feely talk, he tends to use scientific explanations.
He says that going barefoot is training his mitochondria to work harder, or something, adding, My mitochondria can kick Daves mitochondrias ass any day of the week.
For his part, Dave worries Cody by going out at night with a torch to check if his animal traps have worked. He grudgingly accepts the mollusks that Cody has dug up.
The two guys are clearly playing up their differences for the camera, and they usually find a good sound bite to express them. Ive got some fresh, wonderful bounty from the sea, Cody tells Dave, who says, I like meat that comes from four-legged hairy animals.
The show starts with a disclaimer that basically explains that much of what we see could have been staged. We dont see the two men waking up in their shelter; cynics are free to assume that they went off island and slept indoors.
On some occasions, the disclaimer reads in part, situations are presented to Dave and Cody so they can demonstrate survival techniques. One hopes that the little woodland creature Dave chases at one point wasnt released from a box in his proximity.
In the interest of avoiding spoilers, we wont reveal whether the two men achieve a grudging respect for each others techniques by the end of the premiere. Lets just say that the premiere suggests theyll be able to drag out the opposites-attack routine for a while.
