HI Bowie history?

The funny thing is I think you're right Cobalt; the clip probably did make the AK Bowie popular because lots of people like clip points and it gave the blade a certain look. I would have greatly preferred a drop point or some other design, however.

As for the 18" AK, how right your instincts were! The 22" length is just getting long enough that often the swing is interferred with by say, other branches on the tree. The 18" length is very nice, as is the 20". My personal all around khuk is about 28 oz and 18" in length.

I think you deserve a lot of credit, Cobalt. Thank you.

Thanks,
None of it would have been possible without Bill and his Family and their willingness to try different ideas.

Ok, got the story :)
Cobalt, can I use this picture on my website, in AKB review? I'll do some digital enhancements, but that's pretty much it.

Gator,
as far as I am concerned you can use it. That specific knife was never made anyway, so go ahead and do what you wish with that drawing. I am glad that it is even on the net, kudos to whomever put it on the net.

Thanks Cobalt.
It's still hanging in there on old HI website, Yangdu's pages.
And I wouldn't mind having original version too ;)

Oh, and my personal gratitude for 18" AK, my #1 and most used kukri. Not that I use them a lot but anyway.

Interesting...it looks sort of like this...

It's made by Bark River, going to be named the "Forrester". I did some chopping with it...a fun knife. Yes...it's the right size. Historically it is closest to what was called a "Cledd".

That one reminds me of my baby, the Welsh Fusiliers Trench knife.
She chops, she stabs, she intimidates...

Both of those are more of a spade or Matchet style fighting blade. I like the one designed by Mike Stewart. He is a master knifemaker/designer, of that there is no doubt.

My design was more of a straight handled AK, plain and simple, no magic to it.

The Forrester I pictured above is single edged...the next Mike has planned is double edged.

Danny...yours is a great grandchild of the original Cledd...indeed it was an ancient Welsh design.

Hey, if enough ppl like the original AKB may be we can give it a shot? I mean another special order for small run...

I like the original BUUUTTTT:

I have always wanted one with a straight edge. It could still be your original point, but if the edge straightens out completely as it continues towards the handle, then the Knife could be used in the kitchen as a CLEAVER. You'd double the usefullness of the knife, and not take anything away from it's camp duties. With the original point it would skin Elk a hell of a lot better than the clip point too.

The original still tapers in- or up or however you say it, and is not flat.

Frankly, without a straight edge and use as a Cleaver, I have no use for owning another Big Honkin Killer knife. With a straight edge- just the removal of that very very slight inward curve, well, that would be ONE FINE CAMP knife and CLEAVER.

I could carve Roast Beast on the table then.

Does anyone agree? Cobalt? What do you say?

I think that would work. Why don't you modify that drawing to what you like and see amd post it.

I don't have the computer skills. I could draw it easy enough, but I don't have teh skills to post it. You see the part of the edge that very slightly curves in as it gets closer to the handle? Eliminate that curve. Leave the point as original. Just have the edge flatten out and stay flat. WAA LAAA. The handle is placed just high enough so your knuckles would clear if the edge were laid flat against a cutting board. Do you see? Instant Kitchen Cleaver butcher Camp knife. All around knife. You take that slight curve out and the usefullnes of that blade goes up 75 % . Keep the original point.

Call it the Cobalt Munk AK Cleaver

Or call it the Cobalt AK Cleaver

I'd buy a knife like that:) Cobalt, flub or not the AKB is my favorite blade bar none. However, I would really like to see one through the artist's eyes. Let's make it heavy, make it straight, and do away with the clip point. We can mass market them as heavy duty must have kitchen survival tools. The MunkCO cleaver (pat# 39584034975739236). I like it:)

We keep it thick- still an all around ass kicken blade...and imagine the eyes of the In-Laws when you pull that sucker out to carve the Thanksgiving Turkey.

I have wanted the straight edged AK Bowie for years. With Cobalt's original point, now you'd have the perfect Elk butcher tool and all around Camp knife too. I want one.

Basically no recurve at all. Actually all that has to be done is draw a straight line from the lowest part of the recurve back to the handle. It will add some width at the base of the blade but not enough to matter. So the area around the Cho would drop to match the rest of the edge in a straight line.

I don't even think it needs to be drawn if you look at the picture, this explanation should be enough. It appears that it would add possibly about 3/8 if an inch to the blade width at the edge.

Here's the pic so y'all don't have to keep scrolling back to the link.

Edit:
Deleted the pic and posted clearer one on next page.;) :D

Or a 1/2" or maybe a hair more- enough so your fingers would clear any cutting surface with the edge flat against a cutting board or whatever.
-about where the 5.5" line and the dark arrow is pointing.

We'd want fullers, right?

The original called for a handle that is screwed on. If we could get this back, then for cleaning and sanitation, it would be a superior feature.

I guess a guy could always pop the rivets and put the screws in. I use allen screw heads for revolver grips. They'd work good.
