I wasn't sure, so I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. It makes sense that they might not want it "as" hard as the sweet spot, but you would want it harder than the rest of the tang if you were going to beat on it, otherwise it would deform. I don't know about throwing metal. I'm no genious when it comes to steel. But I would imagine that it wouldn't be too bad, otherwise our hardened tools would be a serious hazard. But on the other hand, I'm sure there's a huge difference between tool steel and high carbon steel, I just don't know what it is. (aside from carbon content).
