HI Bowie history?

Let's see if this shows.. Strange. Can't attach, says image tooo big, but Yvsa already posted same img?
Anyway, here's a link to cleaned up version :)

Start making them. I will take 3 of them, with a flat heavy leather sheath with no wood inside the leather sheath. I would like for the leather sheath to be black in color.

What you do Gator is get the URL and copy it. Then you come to the post and insert the URL in the little drop down box you get when you click on the little square pic at the top right with the mountain and I assume, moon in it like this....

Now I'm gonna go back and delete the other one. No use wasting bandwidth on two similar pix.;) :D

Well it was alright a minute ago, gotta figure out what's wrong now.

2nd Edit:
Well I got it back up and then left and came back and it was gone again. Gator do you have it set for a private account or somehow different than the other one?

Here's the URL for the link anyway...
http://us.f3.yahoofs.com/users/41b61074z39288d27/2fc7/__sr_/bc4b.jpg?phT2zSDBtMORDGOo
You can copy and paste it into your browser address bar and it will bring the pic up.

Anybody else not seeing it? :grumpy:

I like the idea of a straight blade on the AK Bowie. The AKB I had I gave away. The recurve was more of an annoyance than anything and served no real useful purpose.

But a straight bladed AK Bowie....now that's something I would buy for sure.

Put my name on the list for one if Aunt Yangdu can talk the boys into making one.

Thanks Yvsa, I was trying to attach, I guess that was my mistake :)
As for the big pic...
Hotlinks are disabled from my site. Which is why I wanted to attach. I think first time when you saw it it was because the same image was already in browser cache, result of viewing it from my link. Later on refresh site denied direct link to the image.

Thanks, that explains it. I uploaded the pic to my Yahoo images and will post it from there.;)

Thanks Yvsa.
I had to disable hotlinking long ago. Ppl link large images in their pages and then my host bill s me for all the bandwidth :)

The original called for a handle that is screwed on. If we could get this back, then for cleaning and sanitation, it would be a superior feature.

I guess a guy could always pop the rivets and put the screws in. I use allen screw heads for revolver grips. They'd work good.

munk
Would probably be easier to just ask for them without the handles and see if Dan might be willing to finish them off. Hope you don't mind me suggesting more work for you Dan, but you do such nice handles, I can't
think of anyone better.
Terry
would be an awesome knife and probaby sell really well.

If that's 'just as easy'; then it would be even 'easier' to take the handles as the Kamis provide, and if anyone wanted a different handle, to seek the Customizer of his choice. It is not fair to Dan to think of him doing 20 handles, and if we include his labor as part of the price of the bowie, which we should, then the price of the Bowie may now be out of reach for some of us.

No, too many deviations kill custom projects. All leather sheaths, etc etc. I'll drop my wondering about screw on handles. Like I said, if a guy wanted screws, he can remove the rivets and place what he wants there.

Unless someone can amend the original drawing soon and send the final to Yangdu for Pala to take back with him to Nepal, this aint happening anyway right now.

I'm not so sure no matter what a wooden model shouldn't be made anyway- because the Kamis like them that way.

I am thinking that asking for both horn and wooden handles wouldn't be too much, though. I'd like wood myself.

OK, I've drawn the new shape best I can by tracing the older style bowie on Cardboard and drawing in the changes. I'm sending it to Yangdu.

I used to draw and paint, and hopefully, did enough of a accurate job.

As far as the handle goes, I am OK with the slabs that Bura puts on the knife. ( I think Bura makes the AK Bowie, doesn't he?)

I agree that too many deviations and the whole project goes south in a hurry.

I don't have a cleaver and this knife will solve that problem.

Looking at the original sketch, it certainly looks to be a heck of a package. One thing I did notice, is note 8. It states that the butt of the knife would be hardened for hammering purposes. My question is this, and it goes out to all, but will probably be answered by Satori, has anyone etched the butt of the HI bowie to see if it is hardened like originally designed?

mike

I've extended the bottom edge about 3/4" of an inch. Does anyone think we should go more? More would make it a classic cleaver- but I'm not sure we want that. We want a slightly deeper AK Bowie with a straight edge and original point. We can still use this as a camp and skinning knife, and then as a cleaver also. If we go too deep, well, shades of psycho killer in the forrest, carrying a cleaver around with him....

I don't think it's hardened either, but i have beat the living hell out of mine. The end that they put on it now will drive nails, tent pegs, skulls, etc.

OK, I was just curious as to if the kamis actually differentially hardened the butt as well. It would be pretty easy, as they could just dunk it in water like they do with the small kuks (bilton). Just interested. I don't remember if Dave etched the end of the tang on his HI Bowie.

mike

I never checked the one I had but the butts were supposed to have been slightly hardened to prevent mushrooming.
I'm pretty sure that the AK Bowie was made to the specs sent, no reason not too.
Jake says he has beat the hell outta his so that pretty much proves it, if it wasn't somewhat hard it would've mushroomed badly.
If the kamis had hardened the butt as much as the sweet spot then you would have the danger of it throwing off bits and chunks of hard steel.
