It's not pretty! This is the ugly backside of the tank that keeps the frontside looking pretty! What you see is a layer of miracle mud on the bottom. Full of little critters, worms, detritivores, etc. Above that is another chamber that has small chunks of live rock, a bag of ceramic media that came with the tank and chaeto macroalgae. The grey box is a 4 LED 12,000K light that runs at night. All kinds of copepods and amphipods and creatures living back there in the rocks and in the algae. I have to harvest about 1/4 of the algae every 2 weeks... The 60 pounds of live rock that I have in main tank takes care of most of the filtration, there's tons of micro-life in there too that you can see running around at night with a flashlight. The backside "refugium" is more of a safe haven for the pods to thrive and grow and they keep the main tank supplied with critters for the Scooter Blenny to eat...
