Hinderer MP-1 vs Olamic Wayfarer 247

I'm debating between these two knives. One of which I will pull the trigger on in the next few days. I thought about asking the forum folks here which one I should buy based on my needs, but I soon realized that would devolve into a pointless debate about the nature of the word "tactical" and various comments to just get a Spyderco or a Kershaw lol.

So in the spirit of more productive and informative discourse, I'm wondering which knife you would choose and why, given your personal tastes. Please be detailed! Please also don't recommend another knife. I've spent a long while thinking about this and these are the two haha.

Thanks in advance!

Never held an MP-1, but I own a 247. From a strict looks department I think the 247 is much better, it weighs almost 2oz less, the steel is better, the company is awesome and my interactions with Eugene here have been very cool as well. It seems like the company really stands behind their product. I love everything about the knife, I've never gone from seeing a knife for the first time to buying one two hours later either, it made that much of an impact on me.

The Wayfarer has the right steel in M390 (depends on the dealer), the right weight at less than five ounces, and a very respectable price-point. Easy choice. I have no experience with that Todd Begg-style pocketclip...but it probably works just fine. Begg sure sells a bunch of knives.

I am the opposite of most here. I have not carried or owned the Wayfarer 247 but do own a MP-1. I love the MP-1. Feels good in the hand, carries like a thinner smaller knife but in the hand and in use it feels like a bigger knife. Every MP-1 I have put my hands on flips great and they are amazingly over built. Either way you are getting an awesome knife with a great reputation so I think it comes down to which one appeals to you more?

I always tell customers that have narrowed their decision to a few knives to get the one that appeals to them the most. If you don't you will end up coming back for it later anyway!

Very cool to hear. Got to admit I'm taken with the 247 as well. I've contacted Eugene and he seems really great to work with.

Sage words! I really do like the look of the MP-1. I also like the idea of it being extremely overbuilt. But then the 247 has a lifetime warranty as well. What kind of decided it for me, for now at least, was that the MP-1 was on washers as opposed to bearings. Throw that in with S35VN instead of ELMAX/M390 and I just felt the 247 was the better overall knife.

Wayfarer is extremely solid, fast flipper, ceramic bearings, all Ti hardware, floating backspacer. Hinderers are well built but I've found you can't crank the pivot down tight and expect them to flip well. They do just fine, if the pivot is just snugged down though. I have two, XM-18's and a XM-24 and the Wayfarer does carry smaller than either.

I have a 247 and four Xm-18's and an Xm-24. I own on Olamic 247. The 247 rides better in pocket but the Hinderer feels better in hand. The 247 is truly engineered as an edc while my Hinderer blades are more robust and can probably take more abuse, if that's your thing. The fit and finish of both is top notch and in all honesty, you would probably love either one. Choosing between the two is a good problem to have. Hinderer would be my choice.

Thanks! Good to get the perspective of someone who has both. If you don't mind my asking, if you could only take one on a desert island which would it be and why?

I believe they're fairly comparable in price these days. The era of 1k+ Hinderer's has come and gone, fortunately.

I paid less than $350 for my 247 new (fairly basic version, but with M390). The Hinderer sells for $695, with S35vn.

I've seen it for considerably less. Around 495. Obviously the Hinderer is more expensive dollar for dollar but there not so wildly different anymore.
