Hinderer or CRK?

Wow, overwhelmingly sebenza recs. I'm curious is the XM that much better than the 0562 to justify buying one.
Omgomgyouguys doesn't seem to think so. If that's the case then the decision is that much easier.

At the end of the day, it's still your choice and if the Hinderer calls to you more, I'd go that route.

Good luck finding a non-flipper XM-18. They are getting scarce.

I would (and did) get a Sebenza 25 with Micarta inlays. You'll be able to get the Sebenza and a ZT 0550 for the same money as an XM.

It doesn't really matter which one you get first, like so many, your curiosity and love for knives will get the better of you and you'll wind up with both. There's lovers and bashers of all brands, the only way to know is to have them in hand so you can fit the knife for your needs. Then there's the want of owning good, quality knives. Just ask me how I know.

I know...I've been looking.
The Sebenza is easier to come by, costs less, more recommended, and it's something different.
I'll probably end up with an XM at some point anyway. Damn this sickness!

Don't listen to any of these people! Get a Brous or a Medford. LOL

And you can buy it for what the manufacturer says it's worth. Try doing that with an XM-18!

great point... ive owned both and think both are fantastic knives, but it's hard to justify the above msrp on xm's. I'd guess if the xm was available to you at msrp or public service prices the thread would have a few more xm votes

That's very likely. As a long as XM-18s command a premium, they will remain off my radar. And now that ZT has weighed in with the 0562CF, the gig is up as far as I'm concerned. The formula for me is simple: 1 Sebenza + 1 0562CF > 1 XM-18.

I am saving up to buy a Hinderer now, and love XM-18s to death. I have owned the 0562, and they are different knives. I like them both, but would always go for the XM-18. If I am going to spend money on a pure WANT (as opposed to need) object, I have no problems saving up and spending silly amounts of money (responsibly) on them. I would rather buy one knife I really want, than three knives that are ok. Because I am only going to live so long anyways, and if I am learning restraint and working hard to save up, why not?

That being said, I have owned 4 CRKs, and still own 3. I sold my 25 because I just wasn't feeling it. Mostly that asymmetrical stop pin that you have to mark with a sharpie or get just right. It was a small thing, but if I am paying that much for a pocketknife (pure want), then small things are ok to nitpick over. I love the Umnumzaan, my small Wilson Combat, and my brand spanking new large plain insingo. The large insingo is probably the most utilitarian knife I have ever owned; I love it.

So, my advice is to budget and get whatever will be fun to carry around. You can always sell it or lose it or whatever.

Edit: Also, I just got a SnG and it is outstanding. Strider is another fun brand to own. Didn't like the PT, haven't tried an SMF yet, hated the AR.

Recently, I came to the realization that the ZT 0562 is the perfect mid level production knife for me. I love everything about it. So rather than continue to buy more ZTs, BMs, and Spydies I've decided to begin the saving and searching for my first high end blade. I've narrowed it to an XM-18 3.5 non-flipper (slicer or spanto) or a sebenza 25. Obviously I love Hinderer designs but I also want to see what a CRK is like. I want to hear your thoughts on these two as a direct comparison. Thanks in advance!

Honestly? I think a hinderer wouldnt be much of a change. In fact if you like the flipping action on the zt you may even be a bit underwhelmed with an xm. To me while i dont own one anymore as i prefer flippers i would say that any and every knife nut needs to own a sebbie at least once just to understand the precision that comes with it. It is a knife that you just cant understand without seeing it in person and operating it. When you do it hits you and you go "oh, now i get it!" I. Sure one day my flipper obsession will die off and i will grow up from the desire for gadgetry. And i just know there will come a day where i will buy a lone sebbie and it will be not just a knife but the only knife i own. I have all ready started thinking that time may be coming soon.

I haven't seen any haters of CRK, just people who want a different steel or the s35vn run harder. I HAVE heard plenty of haters on RHK for several reasons. What's that mean?

+1 , especially on the hardness issue. I sold my Sebenza for 2 reasons: I found it awkward to use (compared to a flipper or anything with a Spydie hole), and it was hard to keep it sharp. I would use it a few times and it needed a touchup. For me, ZDP-189, Elmax, M4, or M390 are just better for EDC

Umnumzaan is the cleverest knife I know of. Thumb studs are also blade stops for open and closed. Only one pillar stand-off and the pivot keeping the scales apart. I love the swedge on the standard blade, but I think it might be the only knife I would like in tanto. I absolutely recommend it, AND they pop up on the exchange all the time for great prices.
The simplicity of a CRK is what keeps me coming back and buying more, and I think the Umnumzaan is the most minimalist knife CRK makes.

I just held a large plain jane 21 about two days ago , and now i want one even more. I also love my zt 0561 which also makez me want an XM-18 more. If i was in your position if the sebenza was more affordable i would jump on that; because like others have stated you 0562 can hold you on a little longer. I man im sure you will eventally have owned both, i so i would make a nod at the 25.

Why would you have to use a Sharpie in order to put the 25 back together. Never heard this one?

What? Not a bruiser? Not a beater?
My sebenza has seen things that most knives don't, it's my trusty companion when working construction. I think that whole "over-built" thing is Bologna, a Seb is one of the most durable knifes out there imo.

I knew someone would jump on that. You have to read what I put all together. I didn't say you couldn't, but that it wouldn't be MY first thing to do to a Sebenza. In reality, we are talking about 2 slabs of titanium and a S30V or S35VN blade. Most any knife is plenty strong enough to do what knives are supposed to do ie: cut. I just wouldn't look at a Sebbie and go "wow, let's beat on this thing."
