Hinderer Skinnys

I’ll be receiving my Hinderer XM-18 3” Skinny on Monday. However, it looks like I’ll be disappointed. A friend got his today and will be returning it to the dealer next week due to two issues: sticky titanium liner lock and uncomfortable access to the liner lock for closing.

Definitely let us know what you get. Curious to hear more reports on these.

Anyone notice the new Skinny 3.0 is $375 everywhere, and $425 at BHQ?

I was going to email BladeHQ earlier today on this but then I noticed they’re selling the WE Schism for $258.00 which is high since KnifeCenter and GP Knives sell it for $227! Either their database is messed up or it’s on purpose.

^^ Yeah, it is very strange to be selling over MAP pricing. They’re going to lose some customers if that’s their new pricing model. I certainly won’t be buying from them. I already have my 3 places I buy Hinderers from and they’re not one of em anyway.
Anyway, back to Hinderer.

Sure do - specs and description are all FUBAR’d. Definitely a mistake.
Somebody should bring it to their attention. I’m too lazy to care. :)

BHQ is also listing the spanto Fulltracks as having 20CV blades, I'm pretty sure all the spanto ones have S35VN. Someone isn't doing a good job over there.

Mine is awesome! No lock stick at all. I sanded the acces to the liner lock 1mm and it is awesome. I think you have to give it a try! Here are some pictures.

That's probably what I'm going to do with mine this weekend, just to make it a little easier to access.

^^ Looks great. I may hook mine up like that.

FWIW, I sent Hinderer a long email concerning my thoughts on the lock bar access.

Just got my Hinderer XM-18 3" Skinny Sheepsfoot. After handling it for about 10 minutes I like it a lot!

No lock stick and the liner lock access is not that bad.

Strong detent so thumb stud opening is a little harder right now.

Great G-10 and blade shape.

I'll take pictures later and see how I feel about it in a couple of days.

Nice! I've been tempted, but I like the DLT TriWay 3" No Choil so much I'm holding out in hopes for a Sheepsfoot version... so far ;)

After using the Skinny yesterday on my job I saw that the edge holding capability was not that great. Before I used it I sharpened the blade on a Naniwa 5000 grit stone and stopped it with 2, 1, 0.5 micron until it was scary sharp. I used a 18pds geomety.

I cut some cardboard boxes (double wall +-20), plastic ribbons which hold boxes together and some soft plastic bubble wrap . Afterwards the knife was really dull. Not what I was expecting of CPM-20CV. As seen in the pictures there light reflecting from the edge where the knife is really dull. It rolled a bit and there was a very small chip.

Today I will sharpen it on a 1000 Naniwa stone and then strop the blade. Lets see how this works.

Does some of you observed the same with the CPM-20CV? Do you know how many HRC that Rick Hinderer heat treats this steel?

Here are some pictures

^^ Thanks for the review/feedback!
Unfortunately, mine hasn’t cut a single thing nor been carried.
It would be very helpful to know what Rick HTs his S35VN,20CV and M390 to.

I’m curious how the knife would’ve faired with the factory edge on it.
Mine is middle of the road sharp for a Hinderer factory edge.

Quick update:

With a newly sharpened edge (still maintaining the 18 dps) the knife performed much better. There were no flat spots or edge rolling as seen in the pictures. Just some minor edge deformation. Still slicing papaer though!

I cut the same wrapping straps and cardboard with it. I even cut some thin electrical wire as seen in the pictures. Maybe the edge had to be sharpened a bit more to get the full potential of it.

I put a 16.5 dps wicked edge on my 3.5 inch skinny, and 17dps on my 3.5" Sheepsfoot and both have held up well with quite a bit of casual use.

M390 was never my favorite steel, and neither is 20cv. Long before I ever owned a Hinderer, I didn't really feel the love that everyone else seems too, and much prefered steels like M4.

The factory edge on mine didn't do too well with cardboard either. I didn't cut nearly as much as you, so my blade wasn't dull, but there were definitely some small chips or rolls. It kept catching on paper when I tried to slice it, and I could feel micro serrations when I ran it on the edge of my fingernail. A few swipes on the sharpmaker cleaned up the edge a little (It was still a working edge before, but now it's a little sharper). I'll have to reprofile it when I get a chance to.
