As I have aged, and played this knife game for 30 years, I've developed a growing antipathy toward spendy, blingy, feel good knives that don't actually cut stuff any better than their inexpensive or moderately-priced brethren. I still own several CRKs, ZTs, etc., and appreciate them for what they are. But over the years, the knives I really appreciate are the low and moderately-priced blades from Kershaw or SOG or Spyderco.
I could carry anything I want. But in my pocket now as I head to church is a gray Spyderco Delica with superblue/420J1 steel and theoriginalspacement deep clip. I appreciate light weight, highly functional knives that bury deeply in the pocket. Knives that won't make me cry if I lose it. A knife I could give to someone if the feeling hit me.
Each to his own. I understand the alure of a spendy knife, and might buy a dealer exclusive Para 2 sometime just to make myself feel good. I've just grown somewhat weary of the spendy genre. So for me a Spyderco or Kershaw will do the trick just fine.
I think that expresses my general feelings pretty well. For the last 20 years I've been pretty happy with mid-grade Spydercos and GEC traditionals. For me, knives are tools, and while I can appreciate the craftsmanship and beauty of many $1000+ knives, but I can't imagine using a $1000 collector's piece to cut anything but loose threads.
