Hoping to order my first 2x72

"IF" you can't get access to a 2X72" belt, you can always use a string cut so it makes a 72" circle. OR - better yet, order a few belts from a fast delivery place.

For temporary mounting just mount VFD outside so you can get to controls for setting up. For final use would be good to have mounted in NEMA 4X box. I would like a box with a clear cover so the LED display will be visible to monitor the motor speed. I would mount external switches & pot to allow ease of control.

That's a good idea on the string. I ordered a few belts from tru grit. I guess I'm just being a little impatient

I ordered the vfd in the link that randy gave me but I can't find the dimensions anywhere. Is there a chance any of you guys are using this vfd and could tell me the dimensions so I can figure an enclosure out?

A lot of the "open case" VFDs are designed to be able to run external controls to them, including a speed control potentiometer, and/or a power switch. Just get some grommets and run the wires out of the bottom of your enclosure. Should stay relatively dust free.
 
Here's a mockup. Made a "belt" with some nylon webbing. So far so good I think.

I'd position the motor and drive wheel closer to the grinder body. You've got more than enough tool arm to make up any difference in length, and as it sits now you don't have a lot of wiggle room. I'd scoot that grinder up to the edge of the bench too, so your sparks have somewhere to go.
 
Good catch with your two comments - yes, by all means move that grinder up to the edge of board. You will want to have plenty of room for the sparks to fall in front, and perhaps a 5 gal bucket with some water to catch most of the grinding dust.

The tool arm should be moved out at least a couple more inches. All 72" belts are not exactly the same length, but are close. A 10" contact wheel will have the tooling arm moving out a bit, as will the small wheel attachments.

My VFD which is the 2.2KW vs your is the 1.5 KW, but in photos they look about the same measurements. My VFD is about 7" high, 4.5" wide, and 6" deep.

Hi Ken I hate to keep asking questions but I want to get as much together as I can before it shows up. Would your vfd fit in a 6" deep enclosure or would it need to be deeper. Thank you

6" wouldn't go. I just went 'n measured again and it's actually about 6-1/4"..... I'd want at least 7" inside.
 
Well I got the grinder and motor moved forward. I got the motor as close to the grinder frame as I could. Hopefully it was enough. Belts showed up today so I'm getting closer. Kinda stressing out about an enclosure and wiring the vfd but I'm sure I'll figure something out. I was just guessing on my belt order. Hopefully Ididn't waste money on belts I don't need.

Thanks for posting this stuff. I have been thinking about e exact same set up. I am interested about the vfd and the enclosure set you are doing. Keep posting!
 
You won't waste money on belts you don't need. Try different belts and see what you like best.
 
One more question. I was thinking I should order an external potentiometer so I don't have to open and close the vfd enclosure to change speeds. I'm not sure which pot I need though. Any advice?

You might also wish to use a switch something like this for the RUN/STOP control: https://goo.gl/rpOgWW

It's convenient to have an OFF/ON switch for the power located in the box along with the RUN/STOP and 10K pot. BE SURE IT"S A Double Pole switch to break both power leads in a 220vac line.

I'm looking at forward/stop/ reverse switches right now but I'm not sure if they work with this vfd. I hadn't thought of the potentiometer and run/ stop switch being in a seperate box. My head is starting to spin a little lol. I'll get it figured out though. Thanks for all your help Ken

You can use: https://goo.gl/LyrP33 for the FORWARD/STOP/REVERSE switch but only use one of the poles. I didn't see a SPDT switch handy. Note my prior post, I edited it for more/better info.

The advantage of having the power OFF/ON switch in a separate box is so you don't accidentally turn the power OFF when you mean to STOP the grinder. NEVER POWER OFF A VFD WHILE RUNNING..... no, world won't come to an end, but it's sure hard on VFD. I have all 3 controls in same box, but do have a cover over the POWER switch so I have to reach up under it to power off.

Since I am in nearly the same boat as you right now I am no expert. However I did get a chance to visit the KC Customs shop a few months back and Ken was gracious enough to grind out a blank as a "Quickie" lesson. 80 grit zirc belt to cut the bevel and a 220 j-flex to near finish and he literally did it in less than 10 minutes. Mind you this is a product of many years grinding but think of it a starting point due to you will be able to remove steel MUCH easier with the added abrasive. Seeing is believing in this case

Ken makes a lot of things look easy!!
