Hoping to order my first 2x72

Ken makes a lot of things look easy!!
Can't argue that... It would be a good idea if you have a maker nearby with experience on a full sized rig to seek them out politely. You will find firsthand the sheer difference in seconds between the two machines.

How about this spdt?

Josh, can you send a link to that switch? I can't see the specs on it, but if it will carry 250vac at 10 or more amps it should be good. Looks like a SPDT switch which is what you want for the FORWARD/STOP/REVERSE switch.

I've thought about adding a REVERSE position to my grinder, but never got around to it..... nor have I seen the need.... yet. I'm told once I use reverse I'll like it.

I can't seem to link it from the app on my phone. Basically I ordered the spdt for forward/ stop/ reverse, a dpst for power on/ off, and a potentiometer. Sorry for all the questions. I really do appreciate your help.

Well here goes nothing. Wish me luck!

Well it's up and running! Need to wire up the remote console, finish the enclosure, and do some adjustments but I think the most stressful part is over. I'll get some pictures up when I get everything finished.

Got it finished up today. Need to make some filters for the air holes in my enclosure and label the remote console and I'm done. Can't wait to use it! I was going to post a video of it running but I can't seem to do it.

You going to be so happy with that VFD 'n grinder!!!! You can set the display to show motor RPM commanded by VFD, or for SFPM for the belt. I use SFPM since that's what I'm most interested in.

You gonna be happy happy happy!

I didn't realize it could be set for sfpm! I just left it on frequency but I'll have to get the manual back out I guess. Thanks for all your help. I couldn't wait so I'm profiling a knife right now so I can grind some bevels.

I have a question. I'm hoping maybe you guys can answer instead of starting a new thread. I bought Fred's bubble jig. I thought maybe it would help the learning curve of grinding on a 2" belt. I bought the kit with the clamp. The problem I'm having is that on the left side of the platen the bracket for the platen is in the way of the clamp. Is there a reason I couldn't make spacers, buy longer platen bolts, and stand the platen off the bracket an inch or so? Sorry if that's confusing and I can add pictures when I'm home. Thanks!

Waaay back in the parameters somewhere is a function to put a value to to correct the RPM display, and darn it, I don't find it this morning in the manual. If you're using a 4" drive wheel the SFPM is close to the RPM anyway. i.e. at 3400 RPM the belt speed is 3560 SFPM. If I remember correctly, I used a 1.047 value for this RPM correction factor.

A 3.82" diameter gives RPM = SFPM...... This is a calculated number not taking into account any belt slippage on drive wheel.

I put a 1" aluminum spacer between my platen and the platen bracket for exactly the reason you mention - giving more room for using the bubble jig.

This is a great thread as I am setting up and gathering the parts to make a grinder too. I have the beginning welding done and have a motor and vfd, but I didn't completely imagine all I could do with the vfd.

Question. Someone said something like "Don't cut the power to the vfd or it is hard on the vfd." I see your toggle and your stop/start button on your remote box. Does the toggle do forward/reverse and the the on/off just do the vfd? Not a power switch? That long bar is potentpot thing (cant remember the name and too lazy to look!).?

Thanks
Randy

Yes sir that is the potentiometer for speed control. The big button that says start/ stop is the 220v power to the vfd. On/ off would have been better but this just happened to be the button I found. The toggle is forward/ stop/ reverse. I'm no expert but if you have any questions I will try to help if I can.

So basically in your case....DON'T hit the on/ff power switch before flicking the toggle to stop....right? Because it is hard on the VFD?
