Ugly looking varmints

That picture makes my skin crawl. Thinking that an animal with teeth and fangs like that almost ran right up to me, I can omly imagine the outcome with dread. The way it jumped onto that tree was startling. I have seen red squirrels move like lightning, but fishers catch them for food. They are so fast its scary. I will have a sheathed knife on my belt from now on, whenever I make a trek into the woods. I guess this gives me a reason for a fast fixed blade with at least a 6" blade. My Camillus Fisk OVB Bowie might be a little slow for these devils. Maybe a Ranger puukko from Kellam would be better. Any suggestions on a fast fixed blade for protection.

Carry a walking stick- something like Crawford Survival Staff! If you are so inclined you can set it up like a spear- distance is your friend. This is the one time I would choose a hand guard- therefore a puuko is not a good choice. A fixed blade necker would be accessible with both hands and fast draw- CRKT Kasper Polkowski is fitting and still capable of bush chores.

The Ranger Puukko from Kellam has a molded guard on the handle. It isn't a metal guard though. I was thinking of a knife that could decapitate the fisher or at least cut him almost in half with one stroke. I don't want to give the animal any chance at getting a piece of me. I will check out the Kasper/Polkowski.

Oh yeah, the staff is a good idea. I know a little about using sticks, so I could make good use of a staff. My only concern is in heavy brush. I might not be able to wield a long staff in the forest.

That is one nasty looking critter that I wouldn't want running at me.
If you wanted a specialised "poker" rather than "slicer" you could check out the CRKT Hissatsu. A push dagger is probably what you really want when something like that is crawling on your face!!

Since I've never seen a Fisher in the wild, I went to Google Image Search and typed in 'Fisher' and came up with this picture.

Doesn't look so bad to me.

Oh, Damn, wrong Fisher. Try this one.

Doesn't look so bad, but looks can be deceiving. I think I prefer the first one.

I would like to dispatch the critter before he gets up on my face and pretends I'm a porcupine, and bites my face or neck until I bleed to death.

I would not fight her off my face, I can assure you of that!

I have seen a few of those in different parts of BC...pretty little animals I think. Can't picture being afraid of them but they are tough little bastards!

We have a lot of coyotes around my house here...hear them howling some nights which I think is kind of nice. DEFINITELY can't picture being worried about them though!

Can't really see either of them attacking me unless absolutely cornered. Probably get a pretty bad bite from a fisher but I bet most guys could fight three at once and walk away at the end.

Damn I've seen 3 of those things the last 2 weeks but I didn't know what they where so I kept my distance now I'm glad I did. One of the times was on a rare occasion where I didn't have a knife either and on top of that my girlfriend was with me that would have been bad

Glad it didn't get you, Rick. Also glad they can be hunted. Do you remember Mike C. from Manchester? A fisher broke into his house and made off with one of his family's pets (can't remember if it was a cat or a dog as they usually have smaller dogs).

We've got those in the woods behind my house. One holed up in a hole in our retaining wall for a winter, too. They make a sound like a crying infant at night and it's unnerving to say the least.

Stay safe and skunk some skunk cousins.

Thanks a lot OldPhysics, i know what a weasel is, a chicken killer on this side of the ocean, nothing more! What a strange continent America is, a weasel big enough to worry a well armed hunter! Take care. Thanks again.

dantzk.

Well, it's not really that big. It's the size of one of a lap dog, like fashionable women carry around in their purses. The guy is kind of pumping it up a bit for entertainments sake and if you don't know what a fisher is you might think it's something like a bear or a cougar. This is a fisher :

But they are very energetic and strong for their size. Couldn't actually kill a man and certainly not a horse though, but it'd hurt like hell to get bitten.

Wow, broke into his house. I was reading some wildlife forum yesterday, and a family had a fisher bounce off their front, well lit window, trying to get their cat who was sitting up on the windowsill. I guess they are everywhere. I had a stray cat coming to my house for many months. He came every day and came in the house too. He would come when I called him. In August he disappeared. I have not seen him since. My cat Peep died in early Sept. I would have kept the new guy, but I think a fisher got him. I heard the most ungodly animal screaming one night around then. Now I know what it was.I guess I have to go to bed now it is late. Talk to you again soon. Have a nice holiday!

They certainly sound manic!

Maybe Bear Mace would be handy if one of these stormed you when out in the woods? Mind you, blowback or getting covered in the stuff yourself is always the problem with pepper spray/gel. Small calibre pistol?

I don't think martens pose a serious threat to humans....and I also think that a knife is a poor choice of weapon in any self defense scenario....but that's just me....yomv

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!

Watch out for those killer rabbits too! Remember your Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch whenever you go into the field.
