Horrible Monster

That picture makes my skin crawl. Thinking that an animal with teeth and fangs like that almost ran right up to me, I can omly imagine the outcome with dread. The way it jumped onto that tree was startling. I have seen red squirrels move like lightning, but fishers catch them for food. They are so fast its scary. I will have a sheathed knife on my belt from now on, whenever I make a trek into the woods. I guess this gives me a reason for a fast fixed blade with at least a 6" blade. My Camillus Fisk OVB Bowie might be a little slow for these devils. Maybe a Ranger puukko from Kellam would be better. Any suggestions on a fast fixed blade for protection.

If it moves that fast, do you really think you'd get it with a knife before it takes a few chunks of meat out of your hide? 20 lbs with teeth like that is like dealing with a large feral cat, and I'm guessing that these are stronger than a cat.

Well, it's not really that big. It's the size of one of a lap dog, like fashionable women carry around in their purses. The guy is kind of pumping it up a bit for entertainments sake and if you don't know what a fisher is you might think it's something like a bear or a cougar. This is a fisher :

But they are very energetic and strong for their size. Couldn't actually kill a man and certainly not a horse though, but it'd hurt like hell to get bitten.

Thanks for the picture, looks like a nice small pet, may be a bit too tonic for me.

Only as a last resort would I use my knife. I have guns on me, both shotgun and handgun. I would use the knife if he was on me. I hope I don't have to find out. I have a Spyderco Perrin With a 5 inch blade. The sheath can be clipped easily on clothing or belt. I would hope it would be enough to repell a fisher, if needed.

No, These are very bad. See the posts from late last night. Thom B. had mentioned one our co-workers, who had his little dog taken out of his house by a fisher a few months ago. THe fisher came through a screen door to get the pets. Kills them and eats them. This is a killer. It was brought into the USA to exterminate porcupines, which ruin trees by eating the bark. The fisher is the porcpines only predator. It bits the porcupines face until it bleeds to death. Then the fisher rolls it over and eats the belly in, devouring the porcupine. They have a mouth full of sharp teeth and long fangs. This is a very aggressive beast you would not want to meet in the forest.

I'm glad you're okay! Judging by the behavior you described I would say it had rabies.

If it had bit you even once.... many painful shots would have to follow... :barf:

Fishers are mean little creatures with the ability to take down animals a good it larger than themselves. Even human sized animals, if given the opportunity. That being said, I agree with a lot of the other guys here. Even a small man is going to be 8 or 10 times the weight of even the largest fishers I've ever heard of. They have a tendency to go for an animals throat, sure, but you'd basically have to lean back and let it do so in order for that cute little terror to hurt you badly.

you were afraid of this? and had a SHOTGUN!

OH MY GOD! That BIG Horney Owl could have crushed your skull....then, while you were incapacitated by the owl, a gigantic weasel could have disarmed you! Then, who knows what could have happened next!
You should seek therapy for your emotional scarring resulting from this event.
:D:D:D

I never heard of a fisher before today. That's an interesting creature.

Down in my neck of the woods, a coyote wouldn;t weigh 60 to 70 pounds..... unless he was a wolf.

Yeah, I'd have to agree I've never seen a 60 pound coyote!

I assume the original post is really a joke...never ran across anything with more than two legs that I would call a horrible monster and certainly can't imagine anyone calling a fisher one!

Edit: just for interest's sake, I just learned on Wikipedia that the largest coyotes on record weighed in at 33.7 kilos (just under 75 pounds) and that the northern subspecies are bigger than the southern ones, and they do specifically mention New England coyotes as being large and possibly interbred with wolves.

I tend to think of all states other than Alaska as southern but I would guess in this context New Hampshire could be considered northern so I guess they could have some pretty big coyotes out there!

Hijack: how do you all pronounce it? Around here we mostly say "KIE-oot."

More interesting (at least to me) info:

Fishers weren't, apparently, introduced to the US to control the porcupine population - they were REintroduced to many parts of the US after being trapped to near extinction to control porcupines. They average around ten pounds, with the females sustantially smaller. They are sometimes killed by bobcats. And they MURDER THOUSANDS OF ARMED CITIZENS EVERY YEAR.

Must be an intelligent critter if it can distinguish between ARMED and UNARMED CITIZENS! :)

terrifying sounding beast indeed! Good thing all I've got to worry about is Polar bears, Grizzlies, and Black bears!

(I really do prefer them over the snakes back in Georgia):o

More fisher pics. Yes they are pretty cute. Very strong for their size though.. but also very cuddly and cute. They are the ultimate paradox. Just like ninjas.

Come on, is this for real? When I read the original post I thought it was a joke...

I very much doubt this guy would attack a human. Most animals would never take on something that was bigger than them, unless they were cornered or otherwise threatened. Apart from that, animals have learned the hard way to avoid humans at all costs./

Are there ANY occurrences on record of Martens or Fishers attacking people?

I'm mean, this is hardly a grizzly bear we're talking about!
