Horsewright Knives and Leather

That's a cool story - my wife has Scottish roots, from ancestors that migrated there from Ireland. We visited Loch Ness last September, as well as several other places in Scotland and Ireland (Edinburough, Invergarten, Inverness, Loch Ness, Stornaway, Dublin, Belfast (and several of the Game of Thrones filming sites in northern Ireland). It's beautiful there.
It really is hard to describe to folks that haven't been there how beautiful it really is! Stornaway! I'm impressed, that's really out in the boonies. Rough crossing?

So because it was kinda a new handle material for me to work with,I used an extra set of scales on another knife, a Paisano. I called this the Experimental Knife. Every step from drilling holes to pinning to just everything, I did to it first. This was in case something bad happened I wouldn't have screwed up the good one, the important knife. I was so serious about this that I had an extra set of scales besides mine set aside just in case. While I had time I didn't have a lot of time as the wedding is in July.

But ya know I might have been over thinking the whole deal cause I didn't really need an Experimental knife. Working with bog oak wasn't that different than other handle materials. Got em done. The Wedding Knife:

I was gonna sell the Experimental Knife so I made my customer a trade. He felt I should just go ahead and sell it as I was trying to take care of him and not make mistakes on the important one. But I felt I was gonna profit on it since I had an extra knife to sell. So we made a trade involving the extra sets of bog oak I still have and some Damasteel he's having dropped shipped to me. But then......... I was getting ready to put the Experimental Knife on the website and he bought it too. So now he's got both of em!

So that's pretty much the story of Bog Oak around here currently. But when I do something with the Damasteel and the bog oak I'll let ya know!

Alright, second from the left. What do you call that model? It seems significantly longer in the blade than most of your designs.

Edit: As usual, beautiful work all around!

Good thing, because I would have bought the experimental knife myself, and I am all spent out thanks to John Wick 4 being finished a few months before I was ready!

As for Scotland, we flew to London, then did a cruise from Southhampton all the way around the Isles, and then to Amsterdam, Belgium, and Paris before returning to Southhampton. So we tendered from the ship to the port in Stornaway.

And we spent 2 nights in London at the start of the trip and again at the end of the trip - touring Tower of London and riding the Eye and dining at the top of Sky Garden at the start, and touring Stonehenge and Buckingham Palace (with changing of the guard) at the end. It was a whirlwind trip, and I felt dead by the end, being ready for a vacation from our vacation.

The one without tape on the blade? That is one of our own steak knives. It was in for a lil handle repair. Here is a set I just recently made my brother:

If that's not the correct knife let me know and we'll get ya answered up. Thanks for the kind words.

Yeah that sounds like quite a trip! Would be exhausting. Years ago I was talking with a BF member here that was from the outer Hebrides. He said the locals could always tell how rough a crossing it was based on the condition of the side of the ferry when it pulled in!

Here is the Experimental knife and the additional sheath I made the customer. Water Buffalo overlay with black stitching:

While we've talked quite a bit about the Sonoran pair and the bog oak knives we haven't really talked much about some of the other knives in this batch:

A Gordo with elk and a turquoise spacer.

Another Gordo with dyed and stabilized box elder:

A Ranchero with elk:

A Cowboy with the same:

A Paisano with sheephorn and green liners:

That's some of the others all done at the same time.

The wedding knife turned out really well. I want to see the damasteel when it’s done. Which damasteel pattern?

Some great work there Dave😎
The Gordo looks a real handy pattern and size.
Appreciate you sharing.

What a nice set of steak knives….. I can see them gracing my table. Time to put my Ginsu knives back in the junk drawer and use the good stuff!!

Why was it called the Experimental knife? Because you used the bog oak as an experiment? Was the pattern new? I agree, it looked good.

Reread post 201 above, a Paisano and trying the handle material too.

It was a bog oak experiment on a Paisano pattern blade, and apparently can be splintery.

I am heading over. I might of mistaken you retiring from ranching instead of making knives?
Yes sir we did retire from ranching. Still making knives and not stopping for the foreseeable future anyhoo. Although I have slowed down some. I tend to make 15 or so at a time and not 60 odd like I use too.

Yes my friend I think ya got it. Perhaps sacrificial would have been a better term then experimental. I'd not worked with the bog oak before and wanted something to try all the processes on that if I screwed up something we weren't affecting the wedding knife that had to be good to go as the wedding is this month.

Sorry been kinda absent. We rented a cabin in Fish Camp just a couple miles south of the Yosemite South Gate. While we weren't really interested in dealing with the crowds of folks at Yosemite on a weekend in the summer season. We did do some fishing and hanging out. Josh our son that just moved back from Fl was able to come too and he did quite a bit of hiking while we were fishing. Sat we ran down to Bass Lake and he was able to hike extensively there on some water fall trails while we did some lake fishing. Aly, my daughter caught the largest Bluegill I've ever seen and I've caught thousands of them. Nichole my wife caught a bass in Bass Lake and I struck out.

She's been busy cutting some knives out for me. This is AEB-L and there are five sheets here with 94 blades total;

Those bluegills sure are fighters. I caught a lot of them when I was growing up in upstate NY. You would think you had a monster on the line, and it turned out to be a small bluegill. Good eating fish.

Are Perch also called sunfish? I remember my dad in law catching a few and we prepared them in cornmeal and fried them. sweet tasting too.
They are especially fun on a fly rod. They tend to turn sideways to the pull of the line and I think that is why they feel bigger than they are. Don't know about the sunfish thing.

Sunfish and perch are not the same. I used to catch sunfish in lakes in the Adirondacks. They are closely related to bluegill and crappie.

Shortly after I returned to school at BYU I caught a bunch of yellow perch in deer creek reservoir. My wife, who grew up on the coast in the Philippines and loves fish, was thrilled when I brought them home.
