There is a vid on youtube where a guy converted a small maglite (2AA) into a fire piston.
I thought that was cool!

Need more data on mac's HID....OMG!
Mac's Customs has a forum at CandlePowerForums.com > Custom & Modified > CPF Custom Builders and Modders > Mac's Customs.
That "Torch" he makes is more of an oddity than anything. It only has a runtime of 10 minutes before recharging, but its a fun 10 minutes.
He used to make a 1000 lumen Osram LED mag-mod that is more utilitarian and has a nice long runtime. I have one of those, or course.
A regular Mag-lite is in the range of 40 lumens, for comparison.
As for the HID lights, thats the same kind of bulb used in stadium lights that takes a few seconds to warm up. So you can't just flick it on like a regular flashlight.
I carry a Quark 123 on my belt from fenix-store. Its only 3" long and makes a lot of light. Something in the range of 160 lumens, which is still like compressing 4 Mag-lites into 3". And not having a filament to break either. Right on.
Life is too short not to have some good lights, blades and guns, right?
