I just got one of these today....I read the description...6" closed 4-5/8" blade .200" thick 1/8" titanium liners and lock....none of that prepared me for what I got when I opened the box. This thing is HUGE. Fit and finish are perfect (made for Ontario in Italy). Lock up is very positive. I have very large hands, and the handle would be too big if it were ANY larger. It wasn't super sharp out of the box, but a little time with the sharpmaker made it razor sharp. The N690Co steel really takes an edge. It is by far and away the heaviest built folder I have ever seen much less owned. Tank is the best way to describe it. The blade has enough belly to be an efficient skinner, and the it has plenty of beef for just about anything you could think of to do with a knife this size.....I think it would do just about anything you could do with a fixed blade this size. The primary bevel is just under 30 degrees included as I was able to put a nice 30 degree microbevel on it with the sharpmaker no problem. Grinds are symetrical on both the blade and bevel to the point I could discern no asymetry with the naked eye or cursory examination with an engineers scale. That is some great attention to detail with this being a recurve design. I will post more after I get some work time with it.

hi bud good review is it this one?

Would you mind taking a picture of it in the hand? Also what size hands do yuo consider yourself to have?

to greebozz: Yes it is the larger of those two

to rededge77: I would be happy to take a picture of it in hand if someone could tell me how to post a picture on here....for some reason I seem to be picture posting impaired. alternatively, I could email you a picture...I know how to do that. As for hand size, I wear 2XL work and ski gloves...sometimes XL if there is plenty of stretch to them.

Sorry for the poor quality pics, but I was in a hurry

I hope this helps a little bit

a little reasearch, and a little work, and viola....I done figured out what everybody else already knew

Any comment about the lock? Anyone used one for fairly heavy work yet as this seem to be promoted for, work which would require the blade thickness? Can the handle actually take the strain which could be supported by the blade?

I've got the, ahem, "little" one. It's a frame lock with handle scales. Most massive liners I have seen. I suspect the handle would fail before the lock, much less the handle system. But I am highly unlikely to confirm this belief, so it remains only that.

The liners are full width of the handles 1/8" titanium, and the pivot, at least from what I can make out without taking the handles off, is the beefiest I have seen. This thing is crazy.

Cliff,

I have been told that to baton with a folder you should pound on the handle end of the blade rather than the tip to take any strain off the lock....do you have any comments on this? (this particular knife has an almost sharp false edge on top so it wouldn't work very well batonning on the tip anyway) I might try some light batonning with this using a plastic hammer (wouldn't want to mess up those pretty scales lol) I ordered this in for a customer of mine, and he decided he didn't want it due to the size of the handle being way too big for him....guess I am going to have to keep it for myself....darn!! lmao...twist my arm to keep another knife.

Thomas, the "little" one isn't very little is it?

I just ordered one of the big ones. It hasn't arrived yet, but so far I'm not too keen on the idea not having a pocket clip on it. I hate belt pouches and I'm fairly certain the factory provided nylon sheath is going to suck. I'll probably have to get something in leather or kydex made for it later. I'm more concerned with a large frame heavy duty folder. Most say this piece will fit the bill there. Maybe I could find someone to put a proper clip on it as well. Time will tell.

I do this on some larger fixed blades as it is better suited to vibrational nodes. On smaller ones it is hard to do it and avoid hitting the handle and this is generally a concern. If the wood is that small that you still have that much room than it is likely that the impact loads are insignificantly anyway. Batoning on the handle, behind the point of entry of the knife in the wood basically inverts the load on the lock, it doesn't reduce it but now tries to collapse the spine towards the handle. It would be similar to doing very hard inertial openings. It would be interesting to see which method had the higher break point. Some knives like the CRK&T M16's would be very strong this way I would assume because of the support of the side studs.

Ghost Soldier, you wouldn't want to carry this on a clip in your pocket anyway...this damn thing is 1-1/4" thick and 6" long....unless you're a sasquach with giant pockets...oh ya and it weighs a ton also. The factory sheath is nice though....cheap but functional.

BigB- I have been hearing\reading about how bulky the knife is. I guess it hasn't really set in on me though, probably will once I handle it. Given your dimensions, I do agree now that it would be rather large for pocket carry overall. I'm glad to hear the factory sheath isn't that bad, a custom leather job might be nice though!

Is it a big knife ? Most would say yes.

Is it a bulky knife ? Depends on how the user defines bulky. I don't think that it is. . . .then again. . . . .I don't slip it into a vest pocket or slacks of a suit.

A clip ? No way ! :D

Is it a "work" knife ? Ohhhh. . . .hell yes ! At least mine is. :D In fact, I dumped a $350+ "hard use" folder after purchasing my Retribution.

Why ?

It's very comfortable, excellent balance, fit and finish is much better than my kicked to the curb "hard use" folder, and it's a cutting monster. :D

I don't know who named the knife, but is fitting ! :D

For the money, it's an excellent buy.
