How about a Camp knife challenge ?

Ok so after a few e-mails and phone calls it has been decided that Brian Andrews is the person nominated to undertake the testing......this means he can't enter any of his awesome knives and gives everyone else a better chance, LOL !!!

We will discuss and finalize the test requirements and get them up as soon as possible so everyone knows what their knives will be put through !!!!!

The question now remains about a time frame, does a month sound about right or am I way off ????

Depends.....kinda limits the steel options to carbon only (unless you can reliably heat-treat high temp). I was going to use 3V and would want to send it in with other blades to Paul Bos in order to cut down on the cost (has a $70 min order). I'd need 2-3 weeks minimum just for shipping back and forth, plus work-on-it time.

But, that said, I don't see why I couldn't have it done in about 6 weeks. Would that be too long?

A month is a bit tight, like Dan, 6 weeks is better for me too.

So rules are no rules??? Just to be sure?

I would love some extra time. 6 weeks should be ok.

Don't tell anyone.... but I'm working on getting a stencil made so I can mark these bad boys with my name.

Like Dan, I need more than a month, because I will be sending my entry out for HT. 6 weeks is reasonable. (Now every customer will expect a custom blade within 6 weeks, you bastids! :D)

It's a great idea for a "contest" and I fully agree that each maker should develop what HE/SHE feels is a really good all around camp knife. This will allow every maker to showcase their ideas, techniques, design features and favorite materials. I'll be watching this thread to see how the details pan out.

Cool thread Pitdog, but (and please excuse me if I missed it...I am just now reading this and tired to quickly get through 5 pages of stuff), but is there specific point to the contest other than making a hell of a lot of cool knives? I like the idea, but a competition seems a bit out of place to me. I LOVE all of the maker's who have said they would take part, and I personally don't see the gain of narrowing it all down to one knife and saying this one is the best. Not sure I really have a good idea otherwise, but the competition factor seems a bit lackluster. What happens after a winner is picked? Is there an auction for the blades for profit, or for a good cause (name your charity) afterward? I guess I just don't see the end result outside of say woohoo John Doe Knifemaker won. I don't know... just my two cents....

and that being said....

I think "camp knife" should be left for the maker to interperet.
Materials, steel, and anything else should all be up to the maker.
Size is unimportant as a "camp knife" is different for just about everybody.
Testing criteria should not be disclosed until all blades are in to the tester.

I think that should really be all there is to it. Just two cents more :)

Hopefully the rules and tests will be decided on soon. I already started on my entry, hopefully it will fit the guidelines decided on.

Not to add more to the mix but I do like C Bryant' idea of raffling the blades afterwards and the proceeds going to a charity of some sort???

I'm cool with that. What's kind of funny is if someone buys the one I submit, they will be the first person to own one of my knives.

The whole winning thing is just a bit of fun the main objective is to see how a bunch of awesome knife makers come up with different ideas to achieve a common goal !;)

I would suggest getting a hold of Kevin Estela and looking into having him evaluate the knives during the courses run at Marty's WLC. It may be too late in the year as most of his courses are over in Sept. I do know he has advanced courses and a winter course. Not sure how many he runs in the fall and winter.
Just a suggestion.
