How about a Camp knife challenge ?

OH BABY I am looking forward to this!!!
And Koyote, I figured you may have an idea on the perfect sheath.

In. Concerned about the deadline. I've got a show in Vegas over Labor Day.

We have a entry date, Do we have a knife submission deadline?

Rick

It sounded like 6 weeks was originally agreed upon as reasonable. 6 Weeks from next Monday would be Sept. 28.

However, I will be hiking/canoeing in the Adirondacks the week of Oct. 5th. So, that could throw a bit of delay in some testing. It is my only vacation in the fall though.

I think we can realistically set a deadline of the end of September. If they straggle in, then I can do photos and details of all the ones that I do have.

If for some reason that deadline is not acceptable, we can see about making a change.

What say you?

You know what I like about this thread?

You can just feel the anticipation and excitement of the knifemakers thinking about their design. There is also a good natured, but healthy spirit of competition and itching to compare each others works head to head.

I had a good little talk with a maker, not participating in this thread, who told me that the unwritten rule on Bladeforums is that a maker can never comment on another makers work except in the knife gallery subforum. The idea being that if one maker criticizes another maker's work what they are really just trying to do is self promote. I think that is a bit bunk and wouldn't be tolerated here at all. At the same time, I miss seeing the critical comments that the men and women who know knives best are omitted from.

I hope this little competition helps dispell some of those myths!

That may be true if it was written without the maker having given permission but all those committing here know that Brian will give his view whether it is good or bad !
At the end of the day it is all good fun though and should be taken in the spirit that it is intended !!!!

I'm far from competing with these makers, but I sure do feel the anticipation and excitement! This is fun as a barrel full of monkeys. :D

I'm in if the deadline is no sooner than the end of September. I'm working on a batch of knives I mean to be good overall performers for camp, survival or combat, anyway. Maybe I'm crazy, but I'd love to have one thoroughly tested and critiqued. My work may not deserve to sit on a stump next to some of these gentlemen's, but I'm sure I'll learn a great deal! Thanks for the idea and opportunity.

I look forward to any maker's comments on another's work, and hope that won't be discouraged. The folks that frequent this forum, including the makers, are what makes this so interesting.

I'm with Mr. Terrio, I don't look at this as much as a competition against the other makers here as a way to get an honest critique of my design and execution as well as seeing how other makers solve problems.

I'm hoping to get started on mine soon but until the show I have later this month is over time is a bit sparse.

I`m in. When do you want us to start sending them in? I know the deadline is end of September, but if they are ready sooner do you want them earlier? If I read it right, we should also include shipping to wherever it goes next?

okay, mid size- upper limit 7 inches, function tests:

whittle tent pegs
make traps
split firewood
make fuzz sticks and kindling.
camp kitchen food prep
some sort of game handling...

design choices aside, is this something you want to have tested by a group, like send it out to tony and big mike or down south to reuben or something? Or photos of knives doing at least some of the work?

I think the Bark River Hudson Bay Camp Knife can do all those things well, but it has an 8" blade.

What was the determination of what happens to the knives after the testing?

That will be up to the individual maker !

2) Return shipping

Whatever it takes to send the knife, please send that along so I can ship it to the final destination. That might be back to the owner, to a raffle winner, or wherever. The point is that shipping will be covered. If there is some sort of contest or raffle, sending me the shipping money will allow me to not be involved in all the money handling of all that. I will just send it where you tell me to.

Pit... does the tester have a Paypal account? As you know, being in Canada, shipping can range from $7 to $25. I would rather have the flexibility of deciding where its going after the test and sending a payment at that point. (let's face it, should the knife get badly damaged, it ain't goin' nowhere but a bucket!)

Hmmm....after the testing, I should be out of my "brokeassedness" due to my wedding and I would love to have a shot at picking up one of the users from any of you fine makers :) I'm sure other members would agree to that

I'm pretty easy on what happens to my blade. Like I said before, if someone ends up with mine, they will be the first person to own one of my blades. Just imagine the prestige!!!! LOL

Please put me on the list of those that would like that kind of prestige!
