How about a little RENO preview?

Those blades with the fantasic cloud and mountain hamons are beautiful!!!! (insert about 50 "I'm not worthy" smileys here.)

I sure do feel sorry for the judges of the "Best Bowie" category at Reno.... wait a minute... NO I DON'T! :grumpy: Heck, I wish I had the job. But if this small sampling from the show knives is any indication they are going to have a tough time deciding.

Here's one more for the mix. A broad-bladed beauty from Ron Newton sporting a 10" long, 2" wide blade of forged 5160 and coffin handle courtesy of Ron's enviable supply of freakin' gorgeous amber stag.

PS - Jamie - let me know if you're seeing the pics OK now.

I've e-mailed them to you Jamie.

If anyone else can't see the Farr / Knight knife please let me know. It's showing up fine for me and I double-checked the link.

Roger

Just wanted to say thanks to Roger for taking the time to post the Reno preview. Good job!

Roger, there isn't an awards competition at the Reno show. Never has been. They have to give the knife judges a rest period from time to time from all the stress of choosing knives.

See you guys at the show. Come by and say hello.
Ron Newton

thanks guys!!!

Simply gorgeous stuff

That Newton Baloon pattern dagger is a show stopper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, Jamie. You staying warm! The handle is N/S blackwood and ivory. Jason gave me a real beauty of a blade to work on. I hope he is not dissapointed with the handle.

I will have 9 of my knives at the show. I'll try to get a picture of them up tomorrow.
Dan Farr

Heh, heh, very funny Dan! Haven't seen much on the plus side of zero in over a week! Shop time? None!

I really like the different handle style. Your learning curve seems almost vertical at times. Nice write-up in KI and congrats on the cutting comp's. Simply kick-ass my man! :D

Moving away from the bowie theme for a moment, next up is a beautiful interframe folder by Bailey Bradshaw. The blade is forged 52100. It's a small folder, only 3.1" closed. Frame is 416 ss, deep relief scrolls with raised 24k gold wire border and the bird is a raised inlay 24k gold grouse. The other side has a goose done the same way.

Next we have a pair of knives from a maker whose work I have always considered to be both distinctive and beautiful - Rik Palm.

Rik's description of the first knife:

"The First one is a nature theme number 3 called "Thunderbird" one of the differences between a Raven or an Eagle is sometimes the Thunderbird is dipicted with curly horns. Its 4 inch'ish blade is edge quenched carved/textured 1084. The handle came from a 100 year old Alaskan Yellow Cedar tree (it has a wonderful spice scent when working it) The Northwest Coast Indians used it for all types of Art including very cool masks. I was going to even distress the handle even more by throwing it around and denting and hopefully breaking a piece of the horn off! But she who must be obeyed said "no".

Next is a Shadow Box Guard knife with a 6 1/2 inch blade, edge quenched 5160, stag handle, wrought iron handle spacer & textured butt cap, guard is 1018 with floating textured copper.

Take a closer look at that guard

I love Rik's work too, here is another shadow box hunter he made last year, sold from Blade Gallery, at the time I wasn't into his stuff, wish I had been. :) He also does killer hamons. (BG pics)

please change the ABS show location next year to Las Vegas. that way i will never have to choose between ABS or Vegas show.. those are amazing pieces. to good for me to miss.. to have both shows the same weekend in the same town would be perfect.

Here are a few more from the table of Nick Wheeler:

First a collaboration dagger: ladder pattern damascus blade by Connie Person,
handle by Nick (fire-cracker damascus guard/ferrule,blackwood handle).

Next, a ring gidgee hunter:

The next knife is something a bit dirrerent fro Nick (but still very cool :) ). A full-tang damascus fighter roughly 8.5" blade of textured (forged in) 320 layer
random patterned damascus wood-grain damascus bolsters ironwood handle etched all the way around the tang. Nick didn't forget the pins :p - they just weren't in yet when this photo was taken.

And finally a really sweet eucalyptus hunter:

Gads Nick! Sleep much? :D

All excellent but I'm with Joss on the textured fighter. Quite original and VERY cool. My money says you don't even get to unpack that one before it finds a new home.

Nick doesn't need sleep. He's still young. He can live on protein powder and coffee! :D

I love ALL those knives!

I sure was hoping we’d get a peek at Burt Foster’s table. Here we go:

First is a frame handled bowie with ladder pattern blade and handle frame, nickel silver spacers and pins, and fossil walrus jaw handle.

Next is Burt’s teardrop hunter. It has a forged full-tang 52100 blade, damascus bolsters, and box elder handle.

orig.jpg

I’ve got a particular fondness for matched sets, so this next camo knife / hunter set really puts a smile on my face. Both have forged W-2 blades with clay hardening lines, damascus bolsters and English walnut handles.

Here’s a better look at the hamon:

And finally, we have a gorgeous S-guard bowie with a 480 layer ladder pattern blade (O1 & L6). top clip is sharpened. Forged "S" guard is 304 stainless. Ferrule is damascus with nickel silver spacers and the handle is giraffe bone.
