How big should a neck knife be ?

Anything bigger than an Izula goes on my belt. I think it is the perfect size and shape for a neck knife.

To me this would seem to be toward the upper limit.

SPECS:

Overall Length: 6.25"
Blade Length (end of handle to tip): 2.88"
Thickness: .156"
Steel: 1095 Carbon
Weight: 2 ounces without sheath

Stupid question but to be considered a neck knife does it have to be a fixed blade?

I've no answers only questions. :o

I ask this because when fishing I often carry a Wenger SAK on a boot lace round my neck.

In a true survival situation would a small fixed blade trump a SAK?

It doesn't even have to be a "survival situation;" a SAK is always nice to have.

Depending on the setting, weight is more of a consideration than size for me. I would rather not have something too heavy pulling on my neck. If I am in the woods, I don't carry about it being seen so size becomes secondary to weight.

I only have 2 neck knives, a Rat Izula and a Becker Necker. I like go running and I wear a neck knife under my shirt. The Izula is my choice of the two to neck carry, as I barely notice it is there. It does not bounce around, so I guess I like neck knives to be about the size of the Izula.

Just curious, what makes you prefer the Izula? I recently bought a Becker Necker and am loving it. I can't keep my mind off the Izula though.
Pict did a review of a Livesay NRGS awhile back that also has my interest.

Yeah I know it sounds an odd question but here is what I have been pondering.....

Should a necker be so small that you don't notice it's there, say maybe a 1"-2" blade and 2"-3" handle ?

Or should your necker be a little more substantial, something that can be your main knife for day hikes etc. Something with a blade around 3" and a 3"-4" handle ?

What are your thoughts ???

In all things knife related....

What do you want it to do, this neck knife?

If you have found a knife that fills the roles that you want it to, and can be comfortable carried around your neck, then you have success.

Some of the smallest knives mentioned in this thread seem too small for me.

I prefer a neck knife to have an acute point. Pointy, oh, pointy pointy...

Also, I don't care to having the neck knife cord ride me, that gets annoying, fast....

So, what do you want it to do?

For myself it might open parcels and letters around the house.Cut up some cardboard boxes for recycling etc.
In the woods it might make fuzz sticks, process fatwood, cut up my apple etc !

i personally hate wearing a neck knife of any size but if i had to an izula size or smaller would be my choice

I only wear neck carry under specific conditions. For example, I prefer neck carry when I'm sitting in a boat. When I'm mostly in the sitting position, the weight of the knife, resting on you chest for the most part means less. I also like to wear neck carry when I'm wearing hip waders since there is no other option to have a neck knife. The izula works well for me here. I've also used my Jimi Wade necker and my JK kit knife. I do prefer a neck blade to have an inverted carry system (i.e. kydex usually). The ability to grasp the handle and tug it out of the sheath is really great when wearing it this way.

For around the town, normal carry, I pretty much always revert to putting my neck knife in my pocket. I just think its weird to keep it under your shirt and it would look even weirder pocking under my shirt to fish the knife out and then withdraw it from under my shirt again. Now if it were a woman doing that, I'd probably think it was hot.

Light and small for me. I have been digging some of the Murray Carter neckers.

However, remember that you can always fold a bigger knife. :D

To me a neck knife is about thickness and width as much as length. If it's a nice thin knife, and not very wide, then I think more length would be fine. Bulky scales takes a knife out of the running. I could see wearing up to 7" or 7.5" OAL if it was built right.

I carried the RAT3 as a neck knife for about a year without a problem. This is my favorite way to carry my RAT3. I handled an izula a few weeks ago and found it to be a little too small for me. I also got to handle the becker necker and really liked the way it felt. I also carried a spyderco native in a kydex sheath and really like this method as well.

Can they become so small that they are really a waste of time to carry ?

I don't think so as just about all of us carry more than one. I carry a Simonich Bitterroot in Talonite everyday as it won't rust.

As for your original question, I believe slightly over 4" in blade length would be acceptable for most folks. The limiting factor at that point is really weight. Carry a 4" blade at even 1/8" thickness can be a drag if all you are wearing at the time is a T-Shirt. That is one of reasons I like the thin blades of the Mora ~ less weight.

I'd guess a 4" blade would equate to a 8" + knife, to me this would be a little excessive for a necker....each to their own though, it would be a boring world if we were all the same !!!!
