How big should a neck knife be ?

I would assume as big as you want. I carry the BK-11. My brother said to me at one time "that's a little big for a neck knife don't you think?" I was thinking..no not really.

Can they become so small that they are really a waste of time to carry ?

I'll be the first to say:
They can for us, because most likely we probably have a fixed blade on us at the time too :)

I like one that I can fit in my pocket, and a Mora is about the largest I will go as well. But I'm like TonyM, rarely do I carry anything around my neck anymore.

Just my opinion here but if I'm carrying a necker in the bush it has to have enough blade and handle to get the job done. I have very small neckers that are very easy to carry and for minor tasks do just fine around town. In the bush my necker gets used for everything my machete won't do and by reflex I reach for my machete before anything else.

I just don't want to feel like I'm pressing the necker into service to do something that is beyond it. I carry it to get away from treating my machete that way, so that means it has to have enough handle and blade to act like a small fixed blade, not just a convenient-to-carry sharp around my neck.

I just got back from six days in the jungle and carried my Livesay NRGS kit. It was a good confirmation of why I like it for the things I do and the way I live in the bush. At night I loop it over my tarp ridge-line over my hammock and use it as a night-light. I also used it to repair my pants, clean fingernails, cut cord, drill holes, cut tape, cut plastic sheeting, etc.

Depending on the setting, weight is more of a consideration than size for me. I would rather not have something too heavy pulling on my neck. If I am in the woods, I don't carry about it being seen so size becomes secondary to weight.

I agree with this. I have several neck knives in various sizes and I almost always have one on when hiking or fishing. The heaviest one I routinely carry is a Swamp Warden.

I have a few blades that are marketed as "neck knives", but the only one I actually carry around my neck is my BR Bravo, which is pretty small, I think it's about a 2.5" blade and weighs next to nothing.

My other "neckers" I either carry in my pockets, or in the case of my Becker Necker I put a TDI clip on it so I can clip it to the inside of my waistband. :)

Yeah, that knife and the set up you have for it is pretty nice. I remember that.

Just my idea, but a neck knife needs to be 2'' to 4'', unless you will have only a neck knife and no belt knife or hand saw. in that case 4'' to 6'' neck knife is a must in the woods, this is just my own thinking. Your friend at the post Donald S.

Are you talking about blade length or overall length ?

I was hoping people would specify on handle lengths as well. I have seen 3" blades with only a 2" handle barely enough to hold in a two finger grip. I have also seen 2" blades with a 4" handle.

Of these two I'd prefer the longer handle with the shorter blade. Little blade can do a lot if you can get enough leverage. That's what I keep telling the ladies anyway.

Kinda like this one then, 2" blade with a 3 1/4" handle !

I'd carry that Buck Mini Alpha Hunter that Jenner 515 posted just because it is such a beautiful design, but not likely around my neck. I fall in love every time I see one!
Out in the woods or around the house, I EDC one or another Emerson folder and can always count on it to be a do-everything knife, (though I do not recommend a tanto for skinning, it is doable).
On planned extended treks I will holster a machete.
The only neck knife I can bear dangling from my neck for more than a couple minutes is an Emerson la Griffe.
A handy little devil that seems nearly weightless.
Three very dissimilar blades pretty much cover all bases for me.

I neck carried my izula while beach fishing, to keep it out of the salt, but it wasn't an EDC option, for me it works better carried tec-tether style. I have a hartsook, but to me its just a letter opener, far to small for most uses, and if my hands were cold, no chance. and if I ever felt the misguided(in my locale) desire to carry a self defense knife a gerber guardian isnt that heavy. but limited utility and definitely not legally defensible where I live. I'm going to go with whatever is comfortable.

Not a big neck knife fan, but 2 1/2 -3" blade. It's more the shape of the handle, than the size. The old Outdoor Edge Wedge was my favorite neck knife, the flat rounded handle made it comfortable to wear and provided a sure grip.

I could never get use to wearing a Mora sized knife on my neck.

.

I've got the top one, had it for 10 or 12 years, quite like it

I have two. The little one is 4 inches OAL with a handle length of 2 1/8 inches. it's designed to sit in a two finger grip securely. The blade is broad enough to get a good pinch grip on. Really small, really works.

The other is a 'pattern 2' - actually, one of the slim finn variants- it's 6.5 OAL and is basically a slim, full tang puukko looking knife. It's fine, but the truth is my little one is easier to carry EDC.
