How brittle is D2?

Exactly and well said DB. Its on a folder I made for myself that Dan over at Doziers camp heat treated for me along with the lockbar and I love it!

You just have to know the steel you work with and I don't hear a lot of reports of bad mouthing going on about D2. I've fixed a lot of points to a nice point again and thats all I've ever seen.

Yes, even more so, bones are harder than wood.

-Cliff

I still think there needs to be clarification of terms as related to knives.

Many times statements tare made that make sense on the surface, but when analyzed don't equal the assumption that was made.

Take for instance the above statement. What bones?? What wood?? Can we agree that some woods are denser than others?? What about knots in the wood...

What about bones?? Not all are the same, some are softer than others. Cutting through ribs would be markedly different than cutting through a long bone in a leg....

You talk about field experience..... I have used my D-2 Boar Knives successfully several times and have seen them used many more times. Often several ribs are cut during the kill with no felt resistance..... and no damage to the blades!

I personally think D-2 is optimal for smaller fighters in the 3-8" range! With the proper build they are plenty strong and the "toothy" edge is VERY aggressive on fleshy mediums!

Once again just my opinions, but they are based on experience...

:D

Spark just banned him for talking trash about bladeforums earlier.

Not to hijack, but are you serious? I mean it was a bit sharp tongued, sure, but banned for that?

Again sorry for the 'jack :)

It's my opinion anyone who posts or implies D2 is any less than a great cutlery steel knows nothing about cutlery or steel.
I don't need any references to prove that,. Just use one.

Well, I guess that settles that. Who needs quantifiable data?

Ever hear the expression, "Don't bite the hand that feeds you"?

Cliff came here for the audience, continually insulted the audience, and finally insulted the man who provides the venue for the audience. Wow. You'd think a "professor" would know better. Did he think he had tenure here?

You gotta be kidding. Cliff is one of the few willing and able to speak honestly regardless of the prevailing winds blowing around here. Without the likes of him around, bladeforums is reduced to the credibility of a sci-fi convention, all vendors and their fans.

Don't be disingenuous. This is not an either/or situation. db said nothing derogatory about quantifiable data. CS however continually denigrated personal and professional experience.

No problem. But biting in like that with a slight on the forums and then an insult to Spark the new owner saying that the old one was better is justifiable reason in my mind also.

Back to the steel . D2 and 1095 are my two fave carbon steels. Stainless I like several but I carry and use D2 more than others in stainless.

That's exactly what just got CS banned. Would you like to try for a clarification?

Yep, take down the tent. Bladeforums is now kaput :D

I see both sides, and although I do understand that lines MUST be drawn, I am nonetheless saddened by this turn of events. We can each draw from this however,a reason to police ourselves, and maintain a balance between our passion and our professionalism.:)

I'm not saddened by it at all. In fact I think new doors will now open and that old folks that used to frequent will be back to once again grace us with their wisdom and practical experience.

db said quantifiable data is unnecessary. How do you argue against that? Things like personal and professional experience are fine, if recognized as anecdotal, generally considered poor quality data in the scientific world.

If one can be banned for criticizing the overall lack of objectivity, then it is a lost cause. Surely, the offended can't be that thin skinned?

That seems to be the trend.

These two things should not be at odds with each other. Speak from personal experience and say it is your opinion based on your personal experience (knowing and accepting that others may have different results). Speak from quantifiable data and specifically cite your credible sources. And most importantly, listen to others, form intelligent opinions, and learn much more than you ever learned by speaking. CS violated all of these tenets.

shecky, I took "references" to mean Cliff's interminable appeals to other people's opinions, referenced but unlinked, unquoted in context, and sometimes even shown to be misquoted.

By the way, I don't come here for data in the scientific sense if it fails to provide me with the information I need to buy the right knife! That includes price, ergonomics -- a subject on which Cliff embarrassed himself more than once -- and even style. As long as the blade/steel/heat treat are capable of performance beyond my needs, Cliff's analysis is meaningless.

I sure hope not. That's exactly what we don't need. I don't worship anyone, but expect experts to be able to stand behind what they say with knowledge, I don't take what anyone says because they have a name.

I've seen lots of diatribes that should have gotten people banned, but because of who they've chosen to attack, they weren't taken to task at all.

Well hurrah to Spark!

Back to D2.
Got Doziers, got Queens, gotta love it.

Well its too late for all that now.

And a lot of practical experience can teach more than someone that does nothing and knows everything.

Take violin lessons from Cliff. I'm sure he knows all about that too. Once you get all the technique down, and learn all the inuendos from him, even though he doesn't play the violin at all, then come give us a concert and we'll see how good it is and whether you'd have been better off listening to someone that actually plays the violin.

Thats the way I see it. And now back to the D2 thread or we'll see this one locked up.
