I understand that many people on this forum are parents themselves, I respect your opinions, but I would just like to share my experiences and some advice which may contradict your own. Apologies in advance.
I was 13 when I had the same problem. I was just getting into fishing at the time and we're getting our saltwater licenses when I asked if I could buy the knife on the counter. I didn't know it at the time but now that I think back to it was a $14 strider SMF ripoff. After that I kept bugging them to buy me another knife but they wouldn't buy me one. They were fine with me having a knife, just not buying me more. I saved up some money and got a couple buck knives and a mora from the local hunting and fishing store. The prices were outrageous. To my parents the knives sortov showed up, no big deal. Then on vacation my mom bought me a short Kabar, which is awesome. The next day she bought about 20 assorted bowie knives from a vendor in Thailand for me and my friends as souvenirs. A couple months after we got back she took them all away for some reason I don't remember. Haven't seen those knives since, and now because of a summer job and a part time job at my families recently acquired restaurant I have an arsenal of knives I only dreamt of a year ago(strider, busses, customs, benchmades, spydercos etc). My parents don't completely approve of the idea yet to get me one for say a birthday present but they know that I love knives and being outdoors. They got over the idea that I'd turn into a knife wielding psychopath years ago. I'm alway mature about the subject and never fool around with my knives, that's probably why they trust me. Btw I'm also 15 right now, heres a bit of advice. If you ever lend your knife to a friend to cut something with or just hold onto, be prepared to sharpen out the dings and chips. I'm not into knife tricks too much, those "knife dance" videos going around Facebook scare me because sharp knives tend to cut deeper than dull knives, and I have no dull knives. I always carry legally. If your parents won't let you buy another knife at all I recommend using a prepaid credit card and getting your knives shipped to a friends house. This would confirm your dads theory about knives being sneaky
.
Hope at least some of this helps, good luck convincing your dad and if you can't there are other options...
