How do I get H1 to Rust?

Polish it with steel wool.. like some of these idiots recommend for stainless knives.
The steel wool will leave it's particles in the metal and THEY will rust.
Bronze, or stainless wool.

So... sorry to bring this post back, but there was no closure.

Did you ever get it to rust? What was done with the knife after the test? Did Sal send you a new Salt for going through the test?

Reading this thread was like reading a great spy novel with the last page missing!

In the bleach/salt water mixture, I only was able to get the pivot washers and the parts of the clip where the coating had worn off to rust – no rust on the H1 parts (blade & lock bar) at all.

Keep in mind that this Salt was from a very early run and had a steel clip - later production has titanium clips so there is no concern with rust and the pivot washer material has been changed as well.

When I was done with the test, I sent the Salt back to Spyderco (still had the copper wire on, which had turned green from the bleach/salt water solution), in case Sal wanted to have a look at it.

Sal, I have an Atlantic Salt from Feb '05. Does it have the new washer material that you spoke of earlier in this post. By the way, this is my new on-duty knife. It's nice to know I don't have to worry about it much.

According to the dates in Sals posts the problems were fixed somewhere during 2005. I would guess they changed the clip and the washers approximately at the same time so you can check if the clip is magnetic, if it is, it's stainless steel and the washer is probably also the old variety.
But do note that it took pretty harsh conditions to even get the washers to rust, so as an EDC or the like, I don't think you'll have problems.
Even if you do, just sent it back and Sal will probably fix it right up. :D

Well all 3 are folders with the only difference being the blade shape so I would GUESS that the overall construction is identical.

I would think so too, what I meant was that the Atlantic came later on than the Pacific/Salt 1 and AFAIK never had a stainless clip so it probably never had the washer problem either. Just curious.

Forgive me for not having read the entirety of the thread, but I could make a suggestion for a new test. Potassium Permanganate. It is a powerful oxidizing agent, and, as I recall, fairly common in most chemistry labs. It is also non-toxic, and in its diluted forms is used to remove chemical staining from the skin.

Here's the wikipedia link, in which it is noted that they use it to "age" props to make them appear old for film sets.
